2019

The Fuhua Group China Open 2018 was a snooker tournament of the 2017/18 season that was held from April 1st to 8th in the Beijing University Students' Gymnasium in the Chinese capital Beijing . The local Fuhua Culture Tourism Development Ltd. was the new name sponsor from this year. Co.

The defending champion was world number one Mark Selby . He reached the final again and secured his second China Open title in a row with an 11-3 win over Barry Hawkins . It was his third title in four years and his 25th tournament win on the Snooker Main Tour .

A maximum break was scored twice in this tournament . Record holder Ronnie O'Sullivan increased his total to 14 and Stuart Bingham managed the “perfect break” of 147 points for the fourth time.

Prize money

The prize money was almost doubled compared to the previous year. The China Open is the second tournament to hit the £ 1 million mark after the World Cup . For example, the winner gets 225,000 instead of £ 85,000, the second receives 90,000 instead of £ 35,000. The entry bonus rose less sharply: Those who qualify for the main tournament but are eliminated in round 1 receive £ 5,000, which is £ 1,000 more than in 2017.

Prize money
winner £ 225,000
finalist £ 90,000
Semi-finalist £ 45,000
Quarter finalist £ 27,000
Round of 16 £ 18,000
Last 32 £ 11,000
Last 64 £ 5,000
Highest break £ 7,000
All in all £ 1,000,000

The Rolling 147 Prize for a maximum break was £ 35,000.

Ronnie O'Sullivan and Stuart Bingham both scored a maximum break and therefore split the combined prize money of £ 42,000 (including "Highest Break") each half.

Final round

Not only had the prize money increased significantly, the tournament requirements also increased significantly. The first four rounds were no longer played in best-of-9 , but in best-of-11 mode. The semi-finals were best-of-19, making it the only tournament other than the World Cup in which the semifinals were already over two sessions. It was also the only normal tournament with a final over 11 winning frames (best-of-21).

final

While Barry Hawkins was in the finals for the first time in Beijing, it was already the fifth China Open final for Mark Selby . In a one-sided match, Hawkins took a 1-0 lead, but then Selby won 5 frames in a row and finally left the afternoon session with a clear 8-2 lead. In the evening Hawkins didn't even get to catch up, and after two high breaks by the defending champion, he was quickly behind with 2:10. He was able to secure a contested frame, then Selby closed with the highest break of the match of 132 points to 11: 3 victory. With his third win at the tournament, he drew level with record title holder Mark Williams .

qualification

As before at the Shanghai Masters , including the four wildcard players from the Chinese association, there were more than 128 participants. Therefore, a pre-qualification had to be scheduled here too, so that 128 players remained for the actual qualifying round.

A good two months before the main tournament, the qualification took place in Barnsley , Northern England . From January 27 to 30, 2018, only some of the games were played. The two top players in the world rankings Mark Selby and Ronnie O'Sullivan and the two best Chinese games Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo only played their games in Beijing, and the three wildcard matches and the qualifying matches that depend on them only took place in April before the main tournament ( a total of 10 games).

The game mode had also changed, Best of 11 (6 winning frames) applied to all games. Last year, 5 frames won were enough to win.

32 players achieved a total of 79 century breaks in the main tournament . There was twice the highest possible regular break of 147 points for Ronnie O'Sullivan , who still lost his first round match, and for Stuart Bingham in round 2, who made it to the quarterfinals.
