A total of 78 teams will take part in the 65th edition of the competition. First, all 20 teams in the Serie A and all 22 clubs in the Serie B . Furthermore, 27 teams are provided by the Lega Pro , the third highest professional league in Italy, with 24 from the Lega Pro Prima Divisione and three clubs from the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione . The 24 teams consist of the four relegated teams from the previous Serie B season , the teams that failed in the playoffs for promotion to Serie B in 2012 and the finalists of the 2012 Coppa Italia Lega Pro .

The remaining places will then be filled with the best clubs in terms of points from Girone A and Girone B from the previous season. The remaining nine starting places will be awarded to the runners-up in the 2011/12 season of the nine groups in Serie D , the highest amateur division, as the first in each group rose.

In the first round the 36 teams of the three lowest divisions meet. In the second round, the winners of the games will meet the 22 clubs from Serie B. In the third round, the first division teams from places 9–20 of the previous season intervene in the action. The 16 winners of this third round then play 8 teams against each other in a further qualifying round, which then meet in the round of 16 against the clubs ranked 1-8 of the previous season.

Every encounter is decided in one game, only in the semi-finals there are home and return games.

In the event of a tie after 90 minutes, a decision will be brought about immediately with overtime and a possible subsequent penalty shoot- out. The away goals rule applies to semi-finals .
