Mode and rules

In contrast to the two previous years, this season the DEL was again held as a closed league for the first time, i.e. without any athletic promotion or relegation. The mode has also been greatly simplified. While the eight best-placed teams in a preliminary round qualified for the play-offs with 52 games per team, the season ended prematurely for the teams in positions nine to 14. For the first time this season there were three points for a win after regular time.
