The Dino 246 is a sports car manufactured by the Italian car manufacturer Ferrari from 1969 to 1974 . Aldo Brovarone designed the body for Pininfarina .

Since the car has a V6 engine instead of the twelve-cylinder engine typical of Ferrari, it was not sold as a Ferrari, but under the Dino brand, which is named after the nickname of Enzo Ferrari's son Alfredo Ferrari . In its original condition, a dinosaur does not have the Ferrari logo or the Ferrari lettering. The Dino has its own emblem, which shows the name Dino in blue letters on a yellow background.

Basic technical information on the Ferrari Dino 246 GT

The Dino 246 was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 1969 as the successor to the Dino 206 GT , the first mid-engine series car produced by Ferrari . The designation "246" refers to the 2.4 liter displacement and the six cylinders of the engine. The Dino 206/246 series formed the basis for later eight-cylinder constructions such as the successor Ferrari Dino 308 GT 4 , the Ferrari 308 and Ferrari 328 .

The Dino 246 differs from the Dino 206 GT in the flap that covers the tank cap on the left C-pillar . The wheelbase grew from 2280 to 2340 mm. While the body of the Dino 206 GT was made entirely of aluminum, the 246 body was made of steel. Only the hoods and doors of the first 246 series (L series) were still made of aluminum. The 65 ° V6 engine manufactured by Fiat now had an engine block made of cast iron instead of aluminum and grew by increasing the bore and stroke from 1987 cm³ to 2418 cm³. In 1970 the Rudge wheel locks were abandoned in favor of five wheel bolts.

The Dino 246 was built in three different series, which differ mainly in modifications to the gearbox. Within these series there were different basic variants for Europe, the USA and Great Britain. For series 1 or L ( tipo 607 L ) all included from 1969 to 1971 built vehicles with the chassis numbers 00402-01116 GT. The number 2 or M ( tipo 607 M ) comprised in 1971 assembled chassis no. 01118-02130 GT. The chassis numbers 02132 to 08518 GT / GTS, built from 1971 to 1974, belonged to series 3 or E ( tipo 607 E ).

At the 1972 Geneva Motor Show, in addition to the 246 GT ( Gran Turismo ), the 246 GTS (Gran Turismo Spider) was presented as a coupé with a Targa roof, which was only 30 kg heavier than the 246 GT.

By 1974 a total of 1868 Dino GT and 1274 Dino GTS had been built, according to other sources 1180 Dino GTS.

• In the television series Die 2 , Tony Curtis drives a red 246 dinosaur in the role of Danny Wilde.
• In the pilot episode of the television series Hart but cordially , Robert Wagner also drives a red 246 dinosaur in the role of Jonathan Hart.
• From 1971 the six-cylinder engines of the Dino 246 GT were also installed in the Lancia Stratos HF . In contrast to the Stratos 0 model, the motor was not installed lengthways, but across the direction of travel, as in the Dino. This allowed a short wheelbase and a very compact overall structure.
