particularities

  • For the first time in almost twelve years, 22 players from the Netherlands were on the field in the game between Excelsior and De Graafschap on August 20, 2011 when an Eredivisie match kicked off. The last time this was the case between AZ and NEC in December 1999.
  • Due to the complicated regulations for European Cup participation, the standings and the fact that the cup final took place in April, the curiosity arose that the sc Heerenveen had to win or lose on the last match day against Feyenoord in order to be internationally safe be. If the game had ended in a draw and AZ and PSV had won their games at the same time, the Frisians would have been left behind in the end, as they would have slipped into 5th place behind AZ due to the goal difference and thus into the playoffs. This situation was not planned that way, explained the KNVB, but when running through the scenarios it did not appear and was therefore not taken into account. The regulations should be changed accordingly in the future. Ultimately, Feyenoord won the match 3-2.
  • On May 4, 2012, UEFA awarded the Dutch an additional starting place in the first round of the Europa League qualification through the fair play rating. The ticket goes to the fairest team in the Eredivisie. After the last matchday these were the sc Heerenveen, FC Twente, champions AFC Ajax and SBV Excelsior. Since Heerenveen and Ajax were already qualified for an international competition, FC Twente had a European starting place before the playoffs. Should the Enscheder prevail in the playoffs, the ticket for the Europa League qualification would go to relegated Excelsior.
