The 98th Giro d'Italia took place from May 9th to May 31st, 2015. The road bike race started as a round trip with a team time trial from San Lorenzo al Mare to Sanremo and ended after 21 stages and 3,486 kilometers in Milan . The competition was part of the UCI WorldTour 2015 .

The Spaniard Alberto Contador won ahead of the Italian Fabio Aru and Mikel Landa from Spain. This makes Contador the second cyclist after Bernard Hinault to have won all three Grand Tours several times.

The 17 UCI WorldTeams of the 2015 season were entitled to start . In addition, the organizer RCS Sport awarded wildcards to the five UCI Professional Continental Teams Androni Giocattoli , Bardiani CSF , CCC Sprandi Polkowice , Nippo-Vini Fantini and Southeast .

New Zealander George Bennett was voluntarily withdrawn from the start by his Lotto NL-Jumbo team in accordance with the rules of the Mouvement Pour un Cyclisme Crédible after a health check carried out by the Union Cycliste Internationale before the first stage showed that the cortisone level was too low , which is an indication of a Disease, but can also be due to the use of cortisone as a doping agent . Favorites

The Spaniard Alberto Contador was the top favorite for the overall victory.
