The IIHF Continental Cup 2005/06 was the ninth edition of the of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . The tournament, which was held from September 23, 2005 to January 15, 2006, was attended by 21 teams from 21 countries. The final round was held from January 13 to 15, 2006 in Székesfehérvár , Hungary .

Three participants in the final round were set, the host Alba Volán Székesfehérvár as well as the ZSC Lions Zurich from Switzerland and the HK Lada Toljatti from Russia , as representatives of the highest-placed countries according to the IIHF world rankings 2005 that had registered for the tournament. The other finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.

qualification

First round

The first round games took place from September 23-25, 2005. The Romanian capital Bucharest acted as the venue for Group A and the Group B games were played in Ankara . Of the eight registered teams, however, one did not take part in the competition, which was then replaced by an out-of-competition team.

Group A

In Group A, the Estonian representative HK Stars Tallinn did not start in the competition. In order to compensate for the loss, those responsible hired the Romanian team from CS Progym Gheorgheni for the tournament. However, the games Gheorghenis did not count towards the tournament.

Ultimately, the tournament host Steaua Bucharest prevailed against the two remaining comrades-in-arms and qualified for the second round. After Steaua had already clinched their second victory on the second day of the tournament and was safely qualified, the Croatian representative KHL Medveščak Zagreb left Bucharest before the final game. The game against Gheorgheni, which was not included in the ranking anyway, was scored 0: 5 goals against Zagreb.

The tournament games were made more difficult by the bad ice conditions, as a new compressor had to be installed a week before the start and the responsible persons did not have the time to prepare the ice surface accordingly.

Group B

Group B, held in Ankara , saw the Spanish club CH Jaca reach the second round. It was only in the last group game against hosts Polis Akademisi Ankara that they won the group. In the course of the tournament, he had done well with the home crowd behind him and a Canadian guest player in goal.

The team Hapoel Amos Lod from Israel caused a curiosity . Since the club management had booked flight tickets from Istanbul back home, the team needed a six-hour drive to get there from Ankara. Therefore, they could not play for the last group game against HK Slawia Sofia . The game was rated 5-0 goals and two points for Sofia.

Group D

The group D tournament was won by the host French club Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble . In a very close group, in which three of the six games ended in a draw, they collected five out of six possible points. After all games ended without a winner on the first day of the tournament, the Coventry Blaze and the hosts won their respective games on the second day of the tournament . Thus, the first two of the group met on the final day, where Grenoble secured the ticket for the third round with a 2-0 victory.

A total of 12,223 spectators attended the six tournament games.

Group E

The third free place in the third qualifying round was secured by the Belarusian representative HK Junost Minsk . Minsk won 4-0 against Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk in their own hall on the first day of the match and thus underpinned their claim to advance to the third round. The match between HK Sokol Kiev and qualifier Club Hielo Jaca ended with the same result . Since Minsk also emerged victorious from the game against Jaca on the second day and Ust-Kamenogorsk defeated Kiev, Minsk only needed one point from the final duel against Kiev. With a narrow 2-1 victory, however, they maintained the top position. The team from Jaca proved to have no chance in the course of the tournament. In the three clear defeats they did not score a single goal.

A total of 8,600 spectators attended the six tournament games.

Third round

The third round of the Continental Cup took place from November 18-20, 2005 in Jesenice , Slovenia . In addition to the host, the three winners of the second round took part in the tournament.

Group F.

In the semifinals, the three qualifiers from the previous round met host HK Acroni Jesenice . On the first day of the tournament, HK Riga 2000 defeated HK Junost Minsk and Jesenice was able to clearly beat the Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble . With a 4: 3 win with a simultaneous defeat of the hosts on the second day, Riga took the first place in the table. Therefore, Jesenice needed a victory in the final duel against Riga in order to reach the Super Final . However, Riga also won this game and confidently secured the remaining free space. Junost Minsk came second behind Riga.

A total of 8,100 spectators attended the six tournament games.

Super final

The Super Final took place from January 13th to 15th, 2006 in Székesfehérvár , Hungary . Were set Alba Volán Székesfehérvár as host, the Swiss participants ZSC Lions Zurich and the HK Lada Togliatti in Russia . Tolyatti had celebrated his greatest international success by winning the European Cup in the 1996/97 season , while Zurich had won the Continental Cup in 2001 and 2002 . In addition, the winner of the third round, the Latvian champion HK Riga 2000 , qualified.

On the first day of the tournament the ZSC Lions Zurich defeated the host Alba Volán Székesfehérvár 3-2 and the favorite HK Lada Toljatti stopped the winning streak of HK Riga 2000 with a 4-1 victory. Tolyatti was also able to narrowly win the second encounter against Székesfehérvár, while Zurich had to admit defeat to the Latvian capitals and thus almost buried hopes of a third win of the Continental Cup. Thus, the Russians were already at the top of the table with two points ahead of the last matchday. With a clear 7-2 victory in the penultimate tournament game, Riga increased the pressure on Tolyatti again, who therefore needed at least one point in order not to be dependent on the direct comparison of the three teams with the same points. With a narrow 1-0 win, Lada Tolyatti finally won the second European Cup in the club's history.

A total of 14,310 spectators attended the six tournament games.
