About this picture

The district of Celle is a district in the eastern center of Lower Saxony .

geography

location

The district is part of the Lüneburg Landscape Association . The Aller , the largest river, crosses the southern part of the district.

Neighboring areas

The district borders clockwise, beginning in the northwest, on the districts of Heidekreis , Uelzen and Gifhorn as well as on the Hanover region .

history

The district of Celle was formed on April 1, 1885 as part of the formation of districts in the province of Hanover from the old offices of Celle and Bergen as well as the places Bröckel , Wiedenrode , Bohlenbruch , Langlingen , Hohnebostel , Fernhavekost , Neuhaus and Nienhof of the Meinersen office . The administrative seat was the city of Celle, which remained independent until it was incorporated into the district in the course of the regional reform in Lower Saxony in 1973.

A larger area in the west of the district was included in the Bergen military training area in the 1930s and temporarily reclassified to the Fallingbostel district . After the Second World War , this area returned to the district of Celle, in which it now forms the community-free district of Lohheide . The number of municipalities in the district was significantly reduced from 1968 to 1974 through numerous municipal mergers as part of the regional reform in Lower Saxony . On March 1, 1974, the communities of Hahnenhorn , Pollhöfen and Ummern moved to the Gifhorn district.

The district was part of the Lüneburg administrative district until the latter was dissolved on December 31, 2004.

On January 1, 2014, the joint municipality of Eschede was transferred to the single municipality of Eschede .

On January 1, 2015, the municipalities of Hermannsburg and Unterlüß merged to form the new municipality of Südheide .
