This is a list of Greek given names in common use today .
Origin of Greek given names
Many of the Greek first names come from ancient times , that is, from ancient Greek . The name Alexandros z. B. is composed of the prefix alex (protection) and the word andros (man), the interpretation varies between “protector of men” and “protector of men”.
Another large part of the first names common today was spread during the Christianization of Greece between 100 and 400 AD. They are mostly names of saints of the Greek Orthodox Church (although not a few, such as Georgios , Philippos or Andreas , have Greek roots anyway), but also religious terms such as Παρασκευή ( Paraskevi - "Friday" or "preparation", "preparation") [on the Sabbath]), Απόστολος ( Apostolos - "Apostle") or Γεσθημανή ( Gesthimani - "Gethsemane" ).
Some Western European names have been Graecized in the sense of a "historical reconstruction", e.g. B. Αλίκη ( Aliki - Alice) and were transferred according to "ancient Greek" rules. The same has been true since late antiquity for names with a Latin root such as Καικιλία ( Kekilia - Latin "Caecilia"), Βίκτωρ ("Victor") or Μάξιμος ( Maximos - "Maxim [us]"). Since the middle of the twentieth century it has also been the practice to transcribe names or their short forms directly from Western European languages, such as B., Πέγκυ ("Peggy") or Τζένη ( Tzeni - "Jenny"), but these are often nicknames for Greek names (in this case e.g. Παναγιώτα - Panagiota and Ευγενία - Evgenia ).
Short names and nicknames
Very often Greek first names are abbreviated, this applies to both female and male first names. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that Greek names are often relatively long and it makes sense to abbreviate them in everyday language. On the other hand, some names appear very often, so that confusion can be avoided by using the different pet forms of a name.
Traditionally, first names in Greece are derived from other family members. As a rule, the first son of a couple receives the first name of the paternal grandfather, the first daughter that of the paternal grandmother; the second son is then named after the maternal grandfather, the second daughter after the maternal grandmother. Although this custom has been partially questioned in modern, urban Greece , it is still practiced in large parts of the country. It often happens that several children of the same generation hear the same name at family reunions.
Formation of short names
The short forms are usually formed
- from the shortening to one of two tribes: Θεμιστοκλής (Themistoklis) becomes Θέμης (Themis) , Θεοδώρα (Theodora) becomes Δώρα (Dora) .
- from the reduction to the first syllable plus the ending: Χριστίνα (Christina) becomes Χρίση (Chrisi) .
- from the abbreviation of a name, as it has emerged through the history of language: Ιωάννης (Ioannis) becomes Γιάννης ( Giannis , pronounced Jannis ).
- from the final consonant of the trunk together with the ending: Ιορδάνης (Iordanis) becomes Δάνης (Danis) .
Pet forms
Often a form of belittling is used for abbreviation and a diminutive suffix (similar to the German
-chen or -lein ) is added to the name.
In Greek these are usually the following suffixes :
- -άκης (-akis) and -ούλης (-ulis) in men's names
- -ίτσα (-itza) and -ούλα (-ula) in women's names, more rarely also -ώ (-o)
Examples:
- Πέτρος (Petros) - Πετρούλης / Πετράκης (Petroulis / Petrakis) - (about "Peter" - "Peterchen" / "Peterle")
- Ελένη (Eleni) - Ελενίτσα (Elenitsa) - (about "Helene" - "Lenchen")
- Άννα (Anna) - Αννούλα / Αννιώ (Annoula / Annio) - ("Anna" - "Ännchen")
Not all names can be belittled with the same suffixes. Suffix formation is subject to various grammatical or word formation rules as they exist in every language.
Short forms of the pet forms
New short names can also be formed from the pet forms, in which the actual word stem is lost, e.g. B. Πετρούλης (Petroulis) becomes Ρούλης (Roulis) .
This is how the common Greek short forms of -akis (e.g. Sakis, Takis, Lakis, Makis ) and -oula (e.g. Voula, Soula, Roula, Toula ) arise .
declination
The Greek first names are, like all Greek proper names, declined and (except in the salutation) used with the definite article .
The modern Greek language knows four cases (πτώσεις) in the declination of nouns (ουσιαστικά), whereby in this context special attention should be paid to the vocative "salutation" which does not exist in German :
- onomastiki (ονομαστική) / nominative
- geniki (γενική) / genitive
- etiatiki (αιτιατική) / accusative
- klitiki (κλητική) / the form of address vocative
It should be noted that with the omission of the dative that was still present in ancient Greek, many of its functions have been transferred to the genitive.
Since personal names are declined like nouns, the following rules apply:
Ending |
-os (Dimotiki) * |
-os (Katharevousa) * |
-as |
-is
|
Nominative |
ο Γιώργος (o Giorgos)
|

|
vocative |
Γιώργο! (Giorgo)
|
Γεώργιε! (Georgie)
|
Κώστα! (Kosta)
|
Δημήτρη! (Dimitri)
|
* There are several (permissible) variants of certain names, see the difference between Katharevousa and Dimotiki .
The ending -s is only (and exclusively) used in the nominative for male first names. A man named Giannis is addressed to Gianni . For female first names, the declension is also dependent on the ending (-a, -i, -o), but the feminine nominative and vocative are usually the same. For more information on the Modern Greek language, see Modern Greek Language .
Trends in naming
According to Greek tradition, children are named after their grandparents. Therefore, there were and are less fashionable trends. Celebrities put in Greece, unlike z. B. in Germany, no name trends; In earlier times the royal family was an exception.
To differentiate between the people in a family, short and pet forms are used, which have the character of a correct first name. Nevertheless, only the long form is written on official documents. An Alex or Alexis will always be called Alexandros on official documents .
Traditionally, all names came from Greek and from the original languages of the Greek region. In Roman times, Roman names were added, in Christian times Hebrew and Slavic ones and, due to the exchange with Northern and Western Europe, also Germanic. Slavic (e.g. Sergios) and Germanic names (e.g. Karolos) are less common, however, as they often lack family background. There are also a few Muslim names among Christians, such as Soultana and the Turkish name Fatme . Certain given names, which are derived from common Greek words, are a rarity, such as Christianos ("Christ").
In recent years it has been observed that the saints names, especially Raffail, Raffailia, Irini, Valantis, appeared more frequently than before. Despite all the modern endeavors of modern Greek society, many childless women believe that they can solve their problem through prayer and the veneration of saints. Many women of faith lead the fulfillment of a long-cherished wish to have children by visiting one of the pilgrimage sites, e.g. B. the church of St. Raphael on the island of Mytilini ( Lesbos ) or the monastery of St. Irini Chrysovalantou in Lykovrisi (Attica) and name their child after the saint venerated there.
name day
The name day is held up as a personal holiday in Greece, it is more important than the birthday. Big holidays of this kind are z. B. May 21, the name day of all Konstantinos and Eleni baptized, or October 26 for the names Dimitris and Dimitra . The dates can be found in the Greek church calendar.
Male Greek first names and their German equivalents
The accents on the transcriptions of the Greek names indicate the stressed syllable. Modern Greek is transcribed according to the Wikipedia naming convention .
