Events
Johann Sebastian Bach
- Johann Sebastian Bach has been the Thomaskantor and musical director of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig since May 30, 1723 . In 1729 he also took over the management of the Collegium musicum founded by Georg Philipp Telemann in 1701 . Through the additional management of the college, he considerably expands his scope in Leipzig's musical life. With this student ensemble he performs German and Italian instrumental and vocal music, including his own concerts in Weimar and Köthen. The concerts take place once or twice a week in the Zimmermannisches Caffee-Hauß (destroyed in the war in 1943) or in the associated garden.
- In 1739, Bach published a series of organ works as the third and most extensive part of his keyboard exercise at 77 pages . The framework is provided by the prelude and fugue in E flat major , with 21 chorale adaptations in between. The original title of the work is:
"Third part / the / piano exercise / consisting / in / various preludes / about the / catechism and other chants, / in front of the organ: / For lovers, and especially those who are familiar with / of such work, for the stimulation of the mind / made by / Johann Sebastian Bach, / Koenigl. Pohlnischen, and Churfürstl. Saechs. / Hoff-Compositeur Capellmeister, and / Directore Chori Musici in Leipzig. / In relocation of the Authoris "
- The third son of Johann Sebastian Bach and Maria Barbara Bach , Johann Gottfried Bernhard Bach, dies in Jena of a "hot fever". Johann Gottfried Bernhard, a problem child of Bach, had disappeared from his position as organist in Sangerhausen last year at the age of 23, leaving behind a mountain of debt , and went to Jena.
- Bach has an excellent reputation as an organ expert. He is called in for numerous new and reconstructed organs: for example in Altenburg in 1739 to examine the organ by Tobias Heinrich Gottfried Trost in the castle church .
georg Friedrich Handel
- George Frideric Handel has lived in London at 25 Brook Street since July / August 1723 and lived here on two floors until his death in 1759. Almost all works created since 1723 are composed in this house. Preparations for the performances often take place in the Handel dining room .
- January 16 : The world premiere of Georg Friedrich Händel's oratorio Saul takes place at the Haymarket Theater in London . The Bible-based libretto was written by Charles Jennens .
- April 4 : The oratorio Israel in Egypt by George Frideric Handel is premiered at King's Theater on London's Haymarket. Probably the organ concerto The Cuckoo and the Nightingale , which Handel completed shortly before, is played between the acts .
- May 1 : Georg Friedrich Händel's opera pasticcio Giove in Argo has its world premiere at King's Theater in London's Haymarket. The piece is a failure and will only see a second performance on May 5th .
- November 22nd : Georg Friedrich Handel's Ode for St. Cecilia's Day (HWV 76), based on a poem by the Englishman John Dryden , premieres together with a performance of Alexander's Feast at Lincoln's Inn Fields Theater in London.
- Handel publishes his seven trio sonatas op. 5 for two violins and basso continuo and his twelve concerti grossi op. 6. The trio sonatas have five to seven movements, including dance movements such as passacaille , sarabande and gavotte , so that they come close to the suite form . The Concerti grossi op. 6 are orchestral works with an interplay between a full string orchestra ( Ripieno ) and a string soloist group ( Concertino ). Arcangelo Corelli was the pioneer for this form, which originated in Italy . In his concerts, Handel combines Italian tradition with the new symphonic developments of the 18th century.
Domenico Scarlatti
- Domenico Scarlatti is the Portuguese princess Maria Bárbara de Bragança , whom he met at the court of the pious and extravagant King John V in Lisbon and taught as a music teacher, after her marriage to the Spanish heir to the throne Don Fernando of Asturias (from 1746 King Ferdinand VI. ) followed to Spain. From October 1730 to May 16, 1733, the Alcázares Reales in Seville was his permanent residence and place of work. Then the farm moves north to the area around Madrid , where, depending on the season, it alternates between the castles of Buen Retiro , El Pardo , Aranjuez , La Granja and El Escorial . Scarlatti is probably still in the "private" service of Maria Bárbara and seems to devote himself almost exclusively to the harpsichord and the composition of his sonatas.
- May 6th : Scarlatti's first wife Maria Caterina dies in Aranjuez .
- Scarlatti publishes his 30 Essercizi per Gravicembalo (= 30 exercises for harpsichord) with Adamo Scola in London . The compositions dedicated to the Spanish king made him famous all over Europe as a legendary harpsichord virtuoso and influenced the works of other composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach (Fantasia in C minor BWV 906, Goldberg Variations ), Jacques Duphly , Pietro Domenico Paradies or Muzio Clementi . The dedication text of the 30 Essercizi per Gravicembalo shows that at least some, if not all of these pieces must have been made in Portugal:
"... They are compositions that were born under the highest auspices of YOUR MAJESTY, in the service of your deservedly fortunate daughter, the PRINCESS OF ASTURIAS, and your most deserving brother, the Infante DON ANTONIO ..."
Georg Philipp Telemann
- Georg Philipp Telemann has been Cantor Johannei and Director Musices of the city of Hamburg since 1721 , one of the most respected musical offices in Germany. In this position Telemann undertook to compose two cantatas per week and one passion per year, but in later years he would fall back on earlier works for his cantatas. He also composes numerous pieces of music for private and public occasions, such as memorial days and weddings.
- Georg Philipp Telemann publishes the description of the eye organ , an instrument designed by the mathematician and Jesuit father Louis-Bertrand Castel , which Telemann visited during his trip to Paris.
- Telemann is accepted into the Corresponding Society of Musical Sciences , founded by Lorenz Mizler , which deals with questions of music theory.
Antonio Vivaldi
- Antonio Vivaldi has been musical director of the Teatro Sant'Angelo in his hometown of Venice since 1726 . There, both as a composer and as a violin virtuoso, he became a living legend and a “pilgrimage destination” for many musicians from all over Europe.
- November 7th : World premiere of the opera Feraspe (RV 713) by Antonio Vivaldi based on the libretto by Francesco Silvani at the Teatro San Angelo in Venice.
Other biographical events
- Tomaso Albinoni himself submitted a collection of six Sonata a tre op. 11 for printing, but the collection was never published (the manuscripts are lost).
- In 1739 Nicolas Chédeville published six concertos from Antonio Vivaldi's op. 8 (including The Four Seasons ) in a version for oboe under the title Les Saisons Amusantes . In order to give the work the pastoral character that was popular in France at the time, he integrated the flute, musette and hurdy-gurdy into the accompanying parts.
- Francesco Feo succeeds Francesco Durante as director of the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo .
- Leopold Mozart , in Salzburg since December 1737 Philosophy studied and the degree of here in July 1738 bachelor was awarded, brings his study of jurisprudence , for which he then enrolled from over.
- Nicola Antonio Porpora returns to Naples, where he quickly reconnects with the public music scene and can continue the series of his operas. The premiere of the revised version of Semiramide riconosciuta on January 20, 1739 in the Teatro San Carlo in particular was a triumph , thanks in part to the participation of Caffarelli . In the same year Porpora becomes first teacher at the Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto .
- After moving to Vienna, Luca Antonio Predieri succeeds Antonio Caldara as Vice Kapellmeister of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle , which is directed by Johann Joseph Fux . After his death in 1741 Predieri took over the sole management of the court orchestra until 1751.
- Johann Adolf Scheibe is employed at Schloss Friedrichsruh (in Drage near Itzehoe ) as Kapellmeister to Margrave Friedrich Ernst von Brandenburg-Kulmbach , who was then governor of the Danish king in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein .
- Silvius Leopold Weiss visits Johann Sebastian Bach's apartment several times with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and the lutenist Johann Kropfgans (1708 – until after 1769). Johann Friedrich Reichardt reports that Weiss and Bach improvised competitively with one another:
"Anyone who knows the difficulty of the lute for harmonious evasions and well-executed sentences must be amazed and hardly believe it when eye and ear witnesses assure that the great Dresden lutenist Weisse with Sebastian Bach, who was also great as a piano and organ player, fantasized in the bet and executed fugitive sentences. "
