The 1993/94 NHL season was the 77th season in the National Hockey League . 26 teams played 84 games each. The Stanley Cup won the New York Rangers after a 4-3 success in the final series against the Vancouver Canucks . New York defenseman Brian Leetch became the first American to be named playoff MVP.

The newly inducted teams of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Florida Panthers played their first season. The Minnesota North Stars had been transferred to Dallas , Texas and now played under the name Dallas Stars .

In addition, the names for the conferences and the divisions had been changed: the game was now played in the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference (previously: Wales Conference and Campbell Conference ). The Eastern Conference was divided into the Northeast Division and the Atlantic Division , the Western Conference into the Central Division and the Pacific Division , which replaced the previous names for the divisions ( Adams , Patrick , Norris and Smythe ). It was used to adapt the terminology of other sports (e.g. the NBA ). The playoff system has also been modified. From now on, the eight best teams from each conference qualified for the finals.
