Qualification criteria

The total number of athletes is 248, 88 of them women and 158 men, as well as two places that the International Canoe Federation (ICF) awards by invitation. Three quota places, in K-1 over 500 meters for women and in K-1 and C-1 over 1000 meters for men, are reserved for the host NOK . Each NOK may send one boat to the start per competition if a quota place has been achieved. There are 13 or 14 boats in the individual disciplines and ten to twelve boats in the team disciplines.

176 quota places will be awarded at the 2011 World Championships in Szeged , 70 more at continental qualifying regattas between September 2011 and May 2012. After the qualification phase on June 1, 2012, the ICF will assign the two quota places to NOKs without quota places.
