Initial plans for a spin-off to the series Chicago Fire left NBC announced in March, 2013. The plot should revolve around the Chicago Police Department. The series concept of the series was developed by Dick Wolf , Derek Haas , Michael Brandt and Matt Olmstead. The first season finale of Chicago Fire , in which the characters were introduced for the planned spin-off, served as the backdoor pilot for the series . Melissa Sagemiller was hired as the main protagonist in April 2013 . Other roles were cast with Tania Raymonde , Scott Eastwood and Kelly Blatz . In May, NBC ordered Chicago PD as a series. Less than a month later, Sagemiller left the spin-off at the request of the producers after the backdoor pilot had broadcast. A few days later, Jesse Lee Soffer was hired for a leading role. Sophia Bush , Patrick Flueger , Marina Squerciati and Elias Koteas were hired as additional actors at the end of August . Archie Kao last joined the series' main cast in September. On December 20, 2013 it was announced that Scott Eastwood and Tania Raymonde and Kelly Blatz have left the series.

In addition, Jon Seda will be part of the main cast again from season 5 after he switched to the spin-off Chicago Justice during season 4 , which was discontinued after one season.
