Start in the Unterrohr sports hall in Schlieren / Zurich for the Zurich New Year's marathon on January 1, 2013
The New Year's Marathon Zurich is a marathon that has been held annually on January 1st since 2005 . The start is at midnight, exactly at the beginning of the new year .
The start and finish are in Schlieren near Zurich . The route consists of a circuit along the Limmat river, passing through the municipalities of Schlieren, City of Zurich , Oberengstringen , Unterengstringen , Würenlos ( Fahr Monastery ) and Dietikon . In addition to the marathon distance, a half marathon , a quarter marathon and a team run (marathon distance) are also offered. The start of the marathon, the finish passages after each lap and, as a highlight, the finish lines take place in the Unterrohr sports hall in Schlieren, which has been converted into a festival hall. This gives spectators the opportunity to watch the race live inside the festival hall in the warmth.
In the run-up to the midnight races, a kids run over 750 meters with a free start is offered for children and young people from 3 to 14 years. The starting gun will be given on December 31st at 10:00 p.m. The start and finish are also in the sports hall.
On January 1, 2020, the run was moderated by Franco Marvulli (four-time cycling world champion, presenter) together with Simone Honegger (radio presenter and runner) and Alain Helfenstein ( Ironman triathlete and speaker).
Official international recognition
The running routes of the Zurich New Year's Marathon are all measured according to the IAAF rules . As one of only seven running events in Switzerland, it is featured in the AIMS ( Association of International Marathons and Distance Races ) competition calendar , which means that the final times achieved - as well as the intermediate times after 10 kilometers and after the half-marathon distance - are officially recognized by the IAAF. Further Swiss AIMS members are the Zurich Marathon , the Zermatt Marathon , the Swiss Alpine Marathon , the Jungfrau Marathon , the Swiss City Marathon and the Lausanne Marathon . Thanks to the midnight start time, the winning times are not only included in the IAAF statistics, but are also the first official annual world best times there year after year, which is of course a special motivation for many participants.
organizer
The New Year's Marathon Zurich is organized by the New Year's Marathon Zurich , a non-profit association founded in 2004. The association's statutes provide for the following purpose: The VNZ aims to maintain and promote running. In particular, he organizes the New Year's Marathon in Zurich on New Year's Eve. The association does not pursue any commercial purposes and does not seek any profit.
The latter is also directly reflected in the registration fees for the New Year's marathon: Despite its status as a marathon recognized by the IAAF, the New Year's Marathon in Zurich is one of the most cost-effective marathons in Switzerland.
