Great Britain took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome with a delegation of 253 athletes (206 men and 47 women) in 130 competitions in 17 sports. The nation was most successful in athletics, where eight medals were won, including gold for the walker Don Thompson . Three medals were won in swimming, Anita Lonsbrough was the winner in the 200 meter chest. Four athletes could each win two medals, but no gold. Three medals (all bronze) were also won in boxing, including Richard McTaggart , whowas allowed to wearthe Union Jack at the opening ceremony.
