The road race of the men at the 2012 Olympics in London took place on 28 July 2012 found.
Over a million spectators along the route watched the men's street race. A British victory was generally expected, especially by the sprinting strong Mark Cavendish . The defending champion from the 2008 Beijing road race, Samuel Sánchez from Spain, was unable to participate due to an injury that he suffered from the 2012 Tour de France . In the final phase of the race, the Swiss racing driver Fabian Cancellara suffered a serious fall at the head of the race , who was also the favorite for the subsequent time trial. The race was won by Kazakh Alexander Vinokurov , who shortly thereafter announced his resignation. Route
The distance of the men's road race was 250 kilometers and started with a mass start. The course ran through central and west London and the north of the county of Surrey , which is south of the British capital. Here a grandstand was built on Box Hill , which had to be negotiated nine times. Originally 3,5000 tickets were sold, but the quota was increased to 15,000 tickets due to high demand. If a rider has crossed the finish line in the same group as the rider in front of him, the same time will be given to him and recorded in the results under the abbreviation "st" (English: same time).
According to the UCI regulations for road races, Article 2.3.039 applies, “Any rider who crosses the finish line with a time that is more than 5% of the winning time will not be included in the ranking of the race.” Measured against the winning time of the Kazakhs Alexander Vinokurow the time limit for the race was 6:03:14 h.
