Petra Kvitová (born March 8, 1990 in Bílovec , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech tennis player . She won the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament in 2011 and 2014 and the Fed Cup six times with the Czech Fed Cup team between 2011 and 2018 .
Career
Kvitová celebrated her first major victory at the Cellular South Cup in 2008 when she defeated the top seeded Venus Williams . At the French Open , in which she was in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in 2008 , she immediately reached the second round. On the way there she defeated Akiko Morigami , Samantha Stosur and in the third round the number 12 seed Ágnes Szávay .
At the US Open she defeated the top seeded Dinara Safina in 2009 and thus reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament again, which she lost to Yanina Wickmayer .
In 2011, Kvitová won the tournament in Madrid . In the final, she defeated Wiktoryja Asaranka 7: 6, 3 , 6: 4 and was in the top ten for the first time. At the lawn tournament in Eastbourne she reached on June 18 against Daniela Hantuchová , who had to give up in the second set, also the final, which she lost to Marion Bartoli in three sets. On July 2, she achieved her greatest success to date; when she made her first final at Wimbledon , she was able to secure her first Grand Slam title with a victory over the former title holder Maria Sharapova . This made her an honorary member of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club . Kvitová achieved another significant tournament victory in October 2011 at the WTA Tour Championships in Istanbul, when she won all five matches there. In the final she defeated Viktoria Azaranka 7: 5, 4: 6, 6: 3. The title brought her second place in the WTA world rankings to date .
Kvitová was also instrumental in the 3-2 victory of the Czech Fed Cup team in November 2011 in Moscow in the final against Russia. For the Czech Republic, Kvitová won the Hopman Cup together with Tomáš Berdych in early 2012 by beating France 2-0 in the final. She was also involved in the Czech success in the Fed Cup (3-1 against Serbia ) in November 2012 in Prague, where she won only one of her two singles.
With a 6: 3, 6: 0 final victory over Eugenie Bouchard , Kvitová won the title at Wimbledon for the second time in 2014 .
She started the 2016 season at the Shenzhen Open in the first round against Zheng Saisai . But she had to give up this match because of a gastrointestinal disease after losing the first set. This illness was also the reason for the withdrawal from the tournament in Sydney . At the Australian Open 2016 , she was eliminated in the second round against Darja Gavrilowa 4-6 and 4-6. After a mixed first half of the season, she won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August . At the end of the season she won two more tournaments in Wuhan and Zhuhai and won the Fed Cup again with the Czech Republic.
During her preparation for the 2017 season , she suffered a fatigue fracture in her right foot in December 2016, which forced her not to participate in the Hopman Cup .
On December 20, 2016, she was the victim of a knife attack by a burglar, in which she was injured in her left hand and was sidelined for six months. She was attacked in her apartment in Prostějov and wounded with a knife. She sustained cuts to her fingers, ligaments and tendons on her left hand, and two nerves were injured. She had to undergo an operation that lasted almost four hours and was not allowed to put any weight on her hand for six months. After the police discontinued the investigation into this case in November, they were reopened after a tip was received in January 2018 and the alleged attacker was caught in May.
Kvitová returned to the tour at the French Open 2017 , but was already defeated by Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6: 7 5 and 6: 7 5 in her second round match . In Birmingham , the second tournament after her return to the tour, Kvitová reached the final and won against Ashleigh Barty in three sets . This was her 20th tournament win overall and the first since Zhuhai in the 2016 season. In Wimbledon, she lost 3: 6, 6: 1 and 2: 6 to Madison Brengle in the second round . At the US Open , she reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2015, in which she failed against Venus Williams 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 7. Since she could not qualify for one of the year-end tournaments, she ended the year in world number 29.
After early defeats in Sydney and at the Australian Open , Kvitová finally reached the final in St. Petersburg in 2018 , which she won against Kristina Mladenovic . At the following tournament in Doha , Kvitová defeated four top ten players on the way to the title. After another win in Indian Wells, she was able to win 14 games in a row. In May and June further title wins followed at the tournaments in Prague , Madrid and Birmingham .
In 2019, she lost to Naomi Osaka in the final of the Australian Open 6: 7, 7: 5 and 4: 6, after she had not given a set in the previous tournament. As a result, she narrowly missed the first-time lead in the world rankings , but improved again to second.
