geography

Pfetterhouse lies in the southwestern Sundgau and borders the department Territoire de Belfort and the Swiss canton of Jura . The neighboring communities there are Bonfol and Beurnevésin . The neighboring communities in Alsace are Seppois-le-Bas , Seppois-le-Haut , Durlinsdorf , Mooslargue and Courtavon .

history

The first mention of the location comes from the year 732 with the Latin name "Petrosa", which can refer to a stony road. According to the archaeologist Karl Gutmann, the name could also be derived from a quarry for a Roman station in the Largtal . The Alemanni later gave the village the name "Pfetterhausen".

After 1648 the place came like the rest of the Habsburg possessions in Alsace to France. The devastated village was occupied by settlers from Tyrol and Switzerland.

From 1871 to 1920 the place belonged to the realm of Alsace-Lorraine . To the west of the town was the triangle between Germany, France and Switzerland. At that time, the “three border stone” Borne des Trois Puissances was particularly well known .

To avoid the German import duty for their products, numerous branches of Swiss watchmakers were set up in the border town. Against this background, the opening of the Dammerkirch – Pfetterhausen railway line on September 29, 1910, and the Pfetterhausen - Pumpfel extension went into operation on October 27, 1910. After the cessation of rail operations, the remains of the former border station can still be seen. The station building was converted into an apartment building.

After 1920, as the French language spread more and more in the originally German-speaking Alsace, the place was called "Pérouse". This later became "Pfetterhouse". The watch industry went down after it was incorporated into France.

1940-1944 the place with the Alsace under German civil administration belonged again to Germany.
