Three years before the county was founded, Captain James Allen came to the area around what is now Des Moines to build a fort. This was named after the Des Moines River , the largest and most important river in the area between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers .

The settlements of Brooklyn, Polk City, Dudley, and Fort Des Moines decided to form a new county. In 1845 MPs were sent to the Legislative Assembly of the Iowa Territory to determine the boundaries of the new county.

On January 13, 1845, a law was finally passed that included the establishment of the county and the definition of its boundaries. On January 17, 1846, the organization of Polk County, named after the President James K. Polk (1795-1849). In the same year, Brooklyn was selected as the seat of administration, which is now part of the city of Des Moines.

The first court and administration building was also built in 1846. Construction of a new building began in 1858, but construction dragged on until 1866 due to the civil war . 1887–1888 the building got a new roof, a dome and an extension.

In 1900 it was decided to build what is now the Polk County Courthouse , which was opened in 1906. In 1962 the building was modernized.

However, since the building no longer met all requirements, the old post office was renovated in 1975 to accommodate part of the administration there.
