Location of the statistical district 15 Gugelstrasse in Nuremberg

Rabus is the name of a neighborhood in Nuremberg that is also called in the name of the district 150 Gugelstraße (Rabus) . The district is located in the statistical district 15 Gugelstrasse . Characteristic for Rabus was above all the high density of restaurants and bars as well as the branching street structure. There was also a large number of small suppliers for the large MAN and Siemens-Schuckert factories .

location

The Rabus district is located between Steinbühl in the north-west, Lichtenhof in the north-east, Neulichtenhof in the east and Gibitzenhof in the south and south-west. The area is roughly delimited by the southern part of Gugelstrasse, Markgrafenstrasse and Frankenstrasse. The MAN - as well as the former Siemens-Schuckertwerke are located nearby .

history

Rabus emerged as a working-class district in the last decades of the 19th century before it was added to the Nuremberg urban area in 1899. Until the 1920s, the district was mainly populated by people from the rural area. An annual event until the Second World War was the Rabuser Kirchweih . The place name Rabus is derived from the Bohemian "Rabause", which means something like hew, notch or clear, in this case the clearing of the imperial forest for the place Rabus. During the industrialization a large part of the inhabitants of Rabus immigrated from Bohemia, the Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria. Some of the residents brought their customs and traditions with them from their homeland, which had shaped Rabus until the Second World War . Rabus was the target of numerous British air raids because of the neighboring MAN and Siemens-Schuckert works . In particular, the devastating air raids on January 2, 1945 and March 16, 1945 had destroyed Rabus's buildings considerably and claimed numerous civilian lives.

Streets

Schwabenstrasse, Sperlingstrasse, Habichtstrasse, Spechtstrasse, Sperberstrasse and Falkenstrasse run within the triangle (south) Gugelstrasse - Markgrafenstrasse - Frankenstrasse. The Kurfürstenstrasse and the Kanzlerstrasse to the west of the Markgrafenstrasse also belong to Rabus .

Siemens-Schuckert settlement

In order to be able to accommodate the workers of the nearby Siemens-Schuckertwerke , which was expanding rapidly at the beginning of the 20th century , planned residential complexes were built in working-class suburbs from 1898–1908. The Siemens-Schuckert-Siedlung in Gauß-, Helmholz-, Siemens-, Gavani-, Watt- and Voltastrasse is particularly noticeable for its very uniform building and apartment sizes. In contrast to the residential buildings in Rabus , the buildings belonging to the Siemens-Schuckert building association were not as badly damaged in the Second World War. However, the settlement of the Siemens-Schuckert building association no longer belongs to Rabus .
