The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the third time in 1977/78 . It was also the 81st edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1977/78 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 37th time in the club's history, the Glasgow Rangers . The Rangers thus qualified as champions for the following European Cup season 1978/79 . Third and fourth placed Dundee United and Hibernian Edinburgh qualified for the UEFA Cup . As a defeated cup finalist against Rangers , FC Aberdeen qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup .
Ayr United and Clydebank FC were relegated to the First Division . Glasgow Rangers' Derek Johnstone was the top scorer with 25 goals .
