The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the 16th time in 1990/91 . It was also the 94th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1999/91 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The Glasgow Rangers won the Scottish Championship for the 41st time in the club's history. The Gers qualified as champions for the following European Champion Clubs' Cup 1991/92 season . The title race was decided in favor of the Rangers on the last day of the game by a 2-0 win in a direct duel against FC Aberdeen . As a cup winner , FC Motherwell qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Second and third placed FC Aberdeen and Celtic Glasgow qualified for the UEFA Cup .
Since the league was increased to twelve teams for the following season, there was no relegated team this season. Celtic Glasgow's Tommy Coyne was the top scorer with 18 goals .
