Two different 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder engines, one with a twin turbo , were offered. From 1992 there was also a V8 engine with air suspension and all-wheel drive. There was also all-wheel drive as an option. Only the normal 3.0-liter engine was available for the export markets.

The GS was supposed to fill the gap left by the LS after it was designed for the upper class.

GS 300 T3

In 1995 the special model T3 appeared. Lexus GS 300 models were used as the basis, which were modified by the Toyota Rally Team TTE through the use of other body, engine and chassis components.

All-wheel drive was not offered. The design was developed by Toyota itself.

The third generation of the GS was presented at the North American International Auto Show in early 2005 . It was introduced in April 2005 with the models GS 300 , (code: GRS190) with a 3.0-liter V6 engine (3GR-FSE) and direct petrol injection , and GS 430 , (code: UZS190) with the well-known 4.3 liter V8. This generation was not introduced in Japan as the Toyota Aristo , but also as the Lexus GS . Toyota wanted to offer the model worldwide under the same name. The car has an integrated vehicle dynamics management ( Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management VDIM ) and semi-active suspension Adaptive Variable Suspension .

At the New York International Auto Show 2005 the variant GS 450h (code: GWS191) with hybrid drive was presented. This model was launched in 2006. The drive consists of a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine (218 kW / 296 PS) with combined direct and intake manifold injection and an electric motor (147 kW / 200 PS) with a system output of 254 kW / 345 PS. Both are connected via a continuously variable transmission . Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology is used. The larger batteries mean that part of the trunk is lost.

The GS 450h weighs 1940 kg. It reaches a top speed of 250 km / h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 s. The top speed was reduced to 240 km / h in the course of the facelift in 2010. The trunk volume, however, increased from 280 liters to 320 liters. The consumption is currently indicated by Lexus with 7.7 liters. Unlike other hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius , the GS has no lower consumption in the city (9.3 l / 100 km) than on long journeys (7.1 l / 100 km).

The new 4.6 l V8 DualVVT-ie with 255 kW (347 PS), 460 Nm torque and 8-speed automatic has been available in the new GS 460 since May 2008 . The GS 460 also received a subtle facelift at the beginning of 2009 (enlarged cutouts on the high beam headlights and modified bars on the lower air inlets) and replaced the GS 430 . The trunk volume of the GS 460 is 430 liters.

Production of this GS series ended at the end of 2011.

Awards

  • The Lexus Hybrid Drive System of the Lexus GS 450h received the Paul Pietsch Prize for Advanced Technology in 2007 . The prize is awarded by Auto motor und sport .
  • The Lexus GS 450h received the IF product design award 2007.
  • It received the Auto 1 of Europe award from Auto Bild for the best sedan.

In August 2011, the fourth generation of the GS version 350 with all-wheel drive was presented in California.

The 450h hybrid engine variant then followed at the 2011 IAA. The fourth GS was launched in Europe on June 16, 2012.

As a further engine variant, the GS 250 with a 2.5-liter V6 engine was added to the range in early 2012 , but this was discontinued in autumn 2013.

With the GS 300h , another hybrid variant has been available since January 11, 2014, which has the drive train of the IS 300h.

The car has Active Steering (Dynamic Handling System), optional all-wheel steering , an integrated vehicle dynamics management ( Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management VDIM ) and semi-active suspension Adaptive Variable Suspension .

In February 2019, sales of the GS ended in Europe in favor of the seventh generation of the Lexus ES .

Facelift

The revised Lexus GS was presented for the first time in August 2015. On January 23, 2016, the GS F, the top model of the series, was introduced in Germany.
