The German record champions defeated the French club Girondins Bordeaux in the finals , making them the fourth German club to win the cup after Bayer 04 Leverkusen ( 1988 ), Eintracht Frankfurt ( 1980 ) and Borussia Mönchengladbach ( 1975 , 1979 ).
Other German participants were SC Freiburg (eliminated in the first round), 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2nd round) and Werder Bremen (3rd round).
Preliminary round

In the event of a tie, the number of goals scored away was decided first , then overtime, if no decision was reached after 15 minutes twice, a penalty shoot-out followed until the winner was determined.
