history

Two burial mounds in the forest on the Baba are evidence of Slavic settlement in the 8th and 9th centuries. They each consist of 50 to 80 burial mounds, the largest of which have a diameter of four to five meters and a height of two meters.

The first written mention of the village belonging to the Wittingau rule took place in 1541. The Hufendorf was created around a village green with an oval floor plan extending in an east-west direction, with the parcels extending mostly to the north or south regularly having a width of 35 to 40 meters. An important medieval trade route ran via Vitín with the Linzer Straße from Budweis to Prague . In times of war, the place was affected by troop raids and looting. During the Thirty Years' War the village was almost completely deserted. In the berní rula of 1654, 15 of the 20 farmsteads are listed as newly settled. After the house numbers were introduced in 1771, there were 24 to 29 houses in the village. In 1840 Witin consisted of 33 houses with 365 inhabitants. In the village there was the St. Chapel dedicated to Mother of God. To witin belonged single farm Cyrchan ( Cirhan ). The pastor was Shevetin . Until the middle of the 19th century, the village was always subject to the Wittingau rule.

After the abolition of patrimonial formed Vitín / witin 1850 a district of the municipality Ševětín in the district administration Budějovice / Budweis. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the townscape was redesigned, in which the wooden farmsteads were replaced by ornate gabled farms in the peasant baroque style. In 1873 Vitín broke away from Ševětín and formed its own community. In the same year the railway line České Budějovice – Veselí nad Lužnicí was built east of the village, but the place never got a train station. In 1910 there were 491 people in Vitín / Wittin , 489 of whom were Czech. After the hailstorm of June 10, 1916 also caused enormous damage in the Mojský les and Velechvínské polesí forest areas between Nemanice, Úsilné , Bída and Ševětín, Prince Johann zu Schwarzenberg had great difficulty in recovering the windbreak. Because of the war there was a shortage of men, horses and wagons. Therefore, between 1917 and 1918, he had two narrow-gauge forest railways built from the České Budějovice – Veselí nad Lužnicí railway line. One of them led from Ševětín to the Velechvínské polesí. After 100 years of independence, it was reincorporated to Ševětín on September 20, 1973 . After a referendum, Vitín broke away from Ševětín on November 24, 1990. The historic town center has been a rural conservation area since 1990.
