history

Borovany was first mentioned in a document in 1186 in a border definition between the area of the manorial estate and the Zwettl monastery . Since 1291 the place belonged to Wok von Borovan from the Witigonischen family branch of the Lords von Landstein . In 1327 Wilhelm von Landstein became the owner, whose son Vítek / Veit sold the estate in 1359 to the brothers Peter, Jost, Ulrich and Johann von Rosenberg . The Rosenbergs united Forbes with their possessions in Gratzen . After Forbes had been in the changing hands of various noble families since the end of the 14th century , the Budweiser patrician Peter von der Linden (Peter von Linda, Petr z Lindy, † 1471/72) , who came from Linz , bought the rule. After the death of his only son, von der Linden founded the Augustinian monastery in 1455 and built the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The late Gothic building was completed in 1466.

The monastery was under the patronage of the Rosenbergs. 1564 raised Wilhelm von Rosenberg , the monastery due to the mismanagement of the provost Matěj Kozka of Rynárec and the monastic ownership took over the Rosenbergs. Around 1578 Forbes was elevated to a market town . After Peter Wok von Rosenberg's death in 1611, the Schwanberg family became new owners. After the defeat in the Battle of White Mountain , their goods were confiscated and fell to Ferdinand II , who renovated the Augustinian monastery in 1630.

In 1729 the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary received the baroque tower and in 1746 a frescoed chapel was added to the north side of the church. The Augustinians built the three-winged prelature house between 1760 and 1770. In the course of the Josefin reforms, the monastery was closed in 1785 and its property fell to the religious fund. In 1789, Prince Johann von Schwarzenberg acquired the estate in exchange for his rule Vlčice and had the monastery buildings converted into a castle.

After the abolition of patrimonial Forbes became an independent municipality in the judicial district of Schweinitz or in the later district of Budweis in 1850 . In 1869, with the construction of the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Bahn, the area received a railway connection. To the north of Forbes, work began on mining the kieselguhr deposit near Rosenstein, to which a works railway was laid.

In 1973 Borovany was promoted to town.
