The place is located in the west of the Luhansk Oblast and in the north of the Perewalsk Raion , about 6 kilometers west of the Rajonszentrum Perewalsk and 42 kilometers southwest of the Oblast capital Luhansk on the river Bila .
Artemiwsk was founded in 1910 as a railway station settlement Katerinowka and renamed in 1923 in honor of the Russian revolutionary Fyodor Andreevich Sergeyev in Artema (селище імені Арте́ма).
