Audi A4 Avant (2008-2011)

The B8 (Type 8K) is the fourth series of the mid-range Audi A4 . The official trade fair premiere of the A4 (8K) sedan took place at the International Motor Show 2007. From December 2007 it was initially delivered as a notchback sedan . At the end of February 2008 the station wagon variant (Avant) was officially presented on the Internet and presented to the public in March at the Geneva Motor Show . The B8 based on the new platform concept " Modular Longitudinal Platform ", on which already the Audi A5 build and all subsequent models in the Volkswagen Group with longitudinal engine will be based.

An open A4, on the other hand, was no longer offered because the A5 Cabrio took over this position in spring 2009.

In November 2011, the A4 range received a facelift , which included both a technical and a visual revision.

The B8 series was manufactured at five production sites. While the sedan, the Avant and the S / RS / Allroad models rolled off the assembly line at the Audi plant in Ingolstadt , only the sedan was built in Neckarsulm . In Aurangabad , India , CKD kits for the A4 sedan delivered from Neckarsulm were assembled and delivered on the premises of a Škoda plant. In China , FAW-Volkswagen in Changchun produced the long version of the A4L sedan for the Chinese market. From 2011, prefabricated kits of the A4 sedan were finally assembled at Garuda Mataram Motor in Jakarta ( Indonesia ) .

Comparable competition vehicles of the A4 are the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class , the Infiniti Q50 , Citroën DS5 and Cadillac ATS .

Changes compared to the predecessor

design

The front and rear of the fourth A4 generation are similar to the Audi A5, which was introduced in March 2007. Compared to the previous model B7 , the vehicle was 117 mm longer and 54 mm wider. An important feature of the design elements large mirrors with integrated LED side markers and in conjunction with the optional stand Xenon light offered daytime running lights with LED technology produces.

The design of the interior is based on the Audi A5. The center console is oriented towards the driver and there is a 6.5 or 7 inch screen in the middle of the dashboard, depending on the radio or navigation system equipment. With a built-in navigation system, it is operated via a separate MMI terminal in the center console or via the simulated MMI operating logic on the "normal" radio. Important functions such as radio volume or air conditioning control can be operated independently of this operating interface.

Furnishing

As with the Audi A3, three basic equipment packages were offered for the first time in A4 history :

  • Attraction : The basic variant includes 16-inch rims (17-inch for six-cylinder engines) and inlays in platinum look.
  • Ambition : In addition to sports seats, chassis and steering wheel, the sporty focus line includes 17-inch tires, a driver information system and various aluminum- look inlays as standard .
  • Ambience : The comfort-oriented line includes in addition to the variant Attraction standard with a seat heater , cruise control , acoustic parking aid rear center armrest, a multifunction steering wheel and the light and glossy package.

In connection with the equipment lines, some special equipment was offered more cheaply. Compared to its predecessors, the list of surcharges has been expanded with many new developments. In addition to the standard automatic air conditioning , a three-zone automatic air conditioning was also offered. The standard radio could be expanded with a sound system from Bang & Olufsen with a total output of 505 watts or with a receiver for digital radio reception ( DAB ).

Also new in the B8 was Audi drive select , with which various vehicle parameters can be changed independently of one another. In addition to the accelerator pedal characteristic, automatic transmission coordination and steering system ratio, the “hardness” of the chassis can be individually adjusted using a chassis package with electronic shock absorber control ( Continuous Damping Control ). An optional “ dynamic steering ” is also available with this package , which makes it possible to reduce or increase the steering angle specified by the driver via the steering wheel. In addition, she can steer independently, e.g. B. when the vehicle breaks away.

A parking aid with a reversing camera or visual display on the screen in the dashboard and comfort seats with active seat ventilation were offered as additional new comfort functions.

For the first time, the safety equipment in the B8 was made possible by various driver assistance systems such as

can be added.

Child seats can be attached to any seat in the back seat. However, no three child seats have enough space next to each other. Isofix brackets on the outside seats of the rear bench can be ordered at no extra charge. For the front passenger seat, the Isofix bracket and the airbag that can be switched off cost a surcharge.

technology

With the new platform, the front axle was moved 154 mm further forward by arranging the differential below the clutch or the converter. Thanks to this change will

  • increased driving dynamics through better weight distribution,
  • pedestrian protection is improved by the modified unit mounting and
  • a 160 mm longer wheelbase.

The braking, suspension and steering systems were revised and the drag coefficient ( ) on the sedan could be reduced to 0.27 (Avant 0.31) by optimizing the body. The crash safety was also brought up to date. In the Euro NCAP crash test in 2009 , the A4 received the highest rating of five stars. In detail, the A4 achieved 93% of the points for occupant protection, 84% for child safety and 39% for pedestrian protection.

drive

The Audi A4 is equipped with front-wheel drive as standard . The quattro all-wheel drive system was optionally available for various engines .

Model variants

The long version A4L was produced for the Chinese market from January 2009 . This variant has a 60 mm longer wheelbase and was initially available with two gasoline engines, the 2-liter turbo engine (132 kW / 180 PS) and 3.2-liter V6 (195 kW / 265 PS). The 1.8-liter (118 kW / 160 PS) and another 2-liter turbo engine (155 kW / 211 PS) appeared later for the A4L .

The S4 of this series was delivered from March 2009 , which, unlike its predecessors, is neither powered by a turbo nor naturally aspirated engine. Instead, Audi relied on a 3.0-liter V6 engine in this model that developed 245 kW (333 hp) by means of supercharging .

In the early summer of 2009, the A4 allroad quattro appeared , a variant with increased ground clearance for off-road use.

In February 2012, the Audi RS4 of the B8 series was presented at the Geneva Motor Show , which was only delivered as an Avant version from autumn 2012. The most powerful A4 model has a 4.2-liter V8 high-speed engine with 331 kW (450 hp), which has been used in the Audi RS5 coupé model since 2010 .

Engines

The engine range includes a newly developed 1.8-liter turbo engine with gasoline direct injection (TFSI), which has an output of 88 kW (120 PS) or 118 kW (160 PS). In contrast to the previous inline four-cylinder gasoline engines in the A4, this one has, among other things, a maintenance-free camshaft drive through a timing chain and a volume flow-controlled oil pump . In November 2011, a revised version of the 1.8 liter engine appeared with the facelift of the model series. The engine received a new thermal management system, which allows the operating temperature to be reached more quickly, thereby reducing emissions and fuel consumption. Further changes have been made through weight savings and optimized friction. In addition, the direct injection is supplemented by an intake manifold injection, which is used in the partial load range to reduce particle emissions. Another new feature is the two-stage valve lift adjustment Audi valvelift for the exhaust camshaft , which was adopted from the 2-liter gasoline engines .

The 3.2-liter V6 petrol engine known from its predecessor has been optimized in the B8 with, among other things, the two-stage intake-side valve lift adjustment Audi valvelift (similar to Honda’s VTEC ), a volume-flow-controlled oil pump and a slightly enlarged bore, which also results in more displacement. As a result, the engine now offers 7 kW (10 HP) more power. Furthermore, the stand 330 Nm maximum torque by the new valve control from 3000 to 5000 min -1 are available. The 3.2-liter V6 petrol engine was discontinued with the appearance of the facelift in November 2011.

The 2-liter diesel engine taken over from the last series was - as the first inline four-cylinder diesel from the VW Group - equipped with common rail injection (previously pump-nozzle ). The V6 diesel engines, which now offer more power, have also been revised. All diesel engines are equipped with a soot particle filter as standard . Since 2014, an SCR catalytic converter with AUS 32 additive has been installed in the 2-liter diesel engines , which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions in order to meet the Euro 6 emissions standard.

With the introduction of the Avant station wagon variant in 2008, additional engines appeared. Two 2-liter models based on the 1.8-liter turbo engine followed, which are also equipped with the Audi valvelift system for the exhaust camshaft and have an output of 132 kW and 155 kW (180 PS and 211 PS). The output of the 155 kW engine was increased to 165 kW (225 hp) in mid-2013. The 1.8-liter TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp), which has been available and revised since the facelift, serves as the basis.

The newly developed S tronic dual clutch transmission with seven gears has been available for the all-wheel drive models of the 2-liter gasoline engine, the 3.0 TDI and the Audi S4 of this series since the beginning of 2009 . The S tronic will gradually replace the automatic converter known as Tiptronic . It celebrated its premiere in a vehicle with a longitudinally installed engine in the compact SUV Q5 , which appeared in autumn 2008.

The Audi S4, which was introduced in 2009, uses a 3-liter V6 petrol engine with supercharging ( Roots blower ) that has an output of 245 kW (333 hp). A version of this engine reduced in power to 200 kW (272 hp) has also been available for the other A4 models since the beginning of 2012. With the RS4 Avant , the most powerful model with a 4.2-liter V8 gasoline engine appeared in mid-2012. The high-speed naturally aspirated engine based on the predecessor has an output of 331 kW (450 hp).

Upgrades

For the new model year of the series, which will be produced from mid-2009, some innovations have been introduced. For example, a revised version of the MMI navigation plus was offered for the previous DVD navigation system , which among other things offers a higher screen resolution, joystick function, integrated hard drive, whole-word voice input and 3D city models. The hard disk is used for the navigation data, but can also store and play music tracks. In addition, the built-in DVD drive offers the option of playing music and video DVDs. Another innovation are the rear lights with LED technology for the brake and tail lights installed in vehicles with xenon lights , as well as a modified exterior mirror design. From this model year, models with 2-liter petrol and diesel engines will be equipped with an automatic start-stop system and a recuperation system ( brake energy recovery ) as standard in combination with a manual transmission . In all vehicles with front-wheel drive, the ESP has been expanded to include an electronic transverse lock ("XDS"), which brakes the inner front wheel when the load is too high in curves, in order to enable neutral driving behavior for as long as possible.

In addition, another diesel variant, the 100 kW (136 PS) TDI, appeared, which was delivered from the beginning of June 2009 to November 2010. The model, known as the 2.0 TDI e , consumed less fuel than the other 2-liter diesel engines thanks to various measures such as low-friction tires, changed gear ratio, start-stop function, brake energy recovery and aerodynamic optimization. While various special equipment could not be ordered for the sedan of the 2.0 TDI e and only the basic equipment line Attraction was available, the Avant could be ordered with all equipment packages and additional equipment. The sedan with the 100 kW TDI and all equipment options was also offered, but the additional designation "e" was omitted here.

For the 2009 International Motor Show , the engine range was expanded to include the 3.0 TDI clean diesel model . This “clean diesel” has exhaust gas aftertreatment by means of selective catalytic reduction , which is implemented with the help of the AUS 32 additive . This significantly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions , which means that this model already complies with the Euro 6 limit values announced for 2014.

A 2-liter TFSI engine with 132 kW (180 PS), adapted and optimized for operation with ethanol fuel (E85), was also released at the IAA . The model, known as 2.0 TFSI flexible fuel , can still be refueled with petrol and cost 600 euros more in Germany than its counterpart designed for petrol alone.

With the 2011 model year, which began in mid-2010, the on-board computer , known as the driver information system , received new functions such as an enlarged display of the gearshift recommendation, display of savings tips and a display of the fuel consumption of individual consumers. Furthermore, the cubic capacity on the tailgate was omitted, the "technology lettering" TDI or TFSI is used instead. In addition, from this model year onwards, all diesel models received protection against incorrect fueling as standard.

In November 2010 the “e” in the model name of the 2.0 TDI e was dropped . However, the fuel-saving properties are retained and have been further improved through further optimizations. In contrast to the previous 2.0 TDI e , this model is only available in the Attraction equipment line and can be configured with any special equipment. The new model is given the additional designation “115g” for the sedan and “120g” for the Avant, which indicates the low CO 2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Facelift

In November 2011, the Audi A4 underwent a technical and visual overhaul. For this, the front in the area of the radiator grille and the headlights was redesigned. The A4 saloon also received new taillights, the shape of which was also modified.

In addition, the direction indicator on models with LED taillights is also made using LED technology. The interior has been upgraded with new materials and some controls have been revised. For example, the MMI navigation system now has four fewer buttons, the seat heating is set directly using a button, the vehicle settings for drive select can no longer be called up individually in the center console and the on-board computer is equipped with a break recommendation.

In addition to a revised chassis, the Audi A4 received a new power steering that works electromechanically. The engine range comprised updated gasoline and diesel engines, all of which now had an automatic start-stop system as standard. Compared to its predecessor, the 1.8-liter turbo-charged gasoline engine has a number of technical innovations such as combined direct and manifold injection and the two-stage valve lift adjustment on the exhaust side , valvelift , 7 kW (10 PS) more power and 70 Nm more torque . Since the beginning of 2012, a less powerful version of the 3-liter TFSI known from the Audi S4 with supercharging has also been offered, which replaced the 3.2-liter V6 petrol engine that was no longer available since the facelift. In the four-cylinder diesel engines, the most powerful 2-liter TDI now developed 130 kW (177 hp). An additional engine variant with reduced fuel consumption was also released with the 120 kW TDI (163 PS). The 2.7-liter V6 diesel engine was omitted, instead the 3-liter TDI was offered in two power levels (150 kW / 204 PS and 180 kW / 245 PS) and was only available with automatic transmissions at the market launch.

The quattro drive has also been revised. In connection with the S-tronic automatic transmission, the sixth generation all-wheel drive system with a crown gear center differential was now available, which for better traction transfers a maximum of 70% of the drive torque to the front axle and 85% to the rear axle. A “sport differential” was also optionally available for the quattro models with S tronic and 3-liter engine, which uses two multi-plate clutches to continuously divide the engine power on the rear axle between the left and right wheel ( torque vectoring ).

The standard and special equipment remained almost unchanged. An electrically opening and closing trunk lid for the Avant models was available as a new option (standard since mid-2014). In contrast, some driver assistance systems have been expanded to include new functions. Sun adds support for the Lane Departure active lane assist the driver by corrective steering intervention. The adaptive cruise control , adaptive cruise control performs at speeds below 30 km / h, a collision is imminent automatic full braking. The MMI navigation plus navigation system supports Audi connect online access , which can be used to access traffic, weather or multimedia services via a Bluetooth connection to an internet-enabled mobile phone or a SIM card.

For the new model year produced from mid-2013, the output of the 2.0-liter TDI with 105 kW (143 hp) was increased to 110 kW (150 hp). The 2.0-liter TFSI also received an increase in output from 155 kW (211 hp) to 165 kW (225 hp). The 1.8-liter TFSI with 125 kW (170 hp), which has been revised since the facelift, served as the basis for this engine. The 165 kW TFSI thus has the same technical innovations as the previously introduced 1.8 liter counterpart. The same engine variant has also been available in the facelift of the Audi Q5 since the end of 2012. Both 125 kW and 165 kW TFSI engines also meet the Euro 6 emissions standard from this model year.

In February 2014, the two 2.0-liter TDI engines with 100 kW (136 PS) and 120 kW (163 PS) were presented under the new model name "A4 Ultra". By optimizing the bodywork and changing the gear ratio, the combined fuel consumption could be reduced to up to 4 liters per 100 km. A variant of the 2.0 TDI engine with an increased output of 140 kW (190 PS) was also released. All three diesel engines meet the Euro 6 standard thanks to the use of an SCR catalytic converter .

From mid-2014 the electrically opening and closing trunk lid was standard on the Avant. The 3.0 TFSI also met the EU6 emissions standard thanks to the use of combined intake manifold and direct injection.

Trivia

  • In contrast to their predecessors, all B8 models are equipped as standard with electric window lifters at the rear and, instead of a handbrake, with an electromechanical parking brake.
  • In contrast to its predecessors, the tailpipes of the diesel models are straight and not bent downwards.
  • A reversible loading floor in the trunk was supplied as standard in the Avant, which on the one hand represents a dirt tray and on the other hand a carpet-clad vehicle floor.
  • As in the Audi A5, the pointers on the rev counter and speedometer move in the 270 ° –0 ° range, clockwise and in relation to the unit circle .
  • The large exterior mirrors are a tribute to an EU type approval that will apply to all newly registered cars from 2010.
  • Standard daytime running lights were now used for halogen headlights . This is generated by a separate halogen lamp.
  • The folding door handles known from the previous series have been replaced by bow handles, which facilitate access to the vehicle in the event of an accident.
  • The fuel tank in the B8 has a capacity of 65 liters in front-wheel drive vehicles (5 l less than in the predecessor), while the tank capacity in all-wheel drive models is one liter less with 64 l (predecessor 63 l). The facelift, which appeared in November 2011, has a 63-liter fuel tank (61 l for all-wheel drive vehicles).
