DFB Cup 2009/10

The games for the DFB-Pokal 2010/11 began on August 13, 2010 and ended with the final between MSV Duisburg and FC Schalke 04 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium on May 21, 2011, which FC Schalke 04 won 5-0. The cup was played for the 68th time.

The DFB Cup winner will be given the right to start in the play-off round of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League , provided that he has not already qualified for the Champions League (or its qualification) via the Bundesliga . In this case, the DFB Cup finalist would be eligible to start the third qualifying round for the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League and the fifth in the Bundesliga would have advanced to the Europa League play-off round. Since Schalke was 14th in the Bundesliga and did not qualify for the Champions League, Schalke took part in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League and reached the quarter-finals, in which the eventual finalists Athletic Bilbao were eliminated .

For Duisburg it was the fourth defeat in the final after 1966 , 1975 and 1998 , making the MSV the least successful finalist.

As in the previous season, no two teams from a club / corporation were allowed to take part in the games for the DFB club cup.

1 From the three regional associations with the most men's teams in play (Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Westphalia), the defeated cup finalist also takes part.
2 SV Sandhausen and SV Babelsberg compete for their second team, as no reserve teams are allowed to participate in the DFB Cup.
3Since the cup finalist VfL Osnabrück had qualified through the 3rd division, the two defeated semi-finalists Eintracht Braunschweig and TuS Heeslingen played a decider for the second starting place for Lower Saxony on May 4th, Braunschweig with 0: 0, 4: 1 i. E. could decide for yourself. After Braunschweig qualified in the 3rd league, TuS Heeslingen got the starting place.

draw

The draw for the first round took place on June 5, 2010. The 64 teams were put in two pots: The amateur pot contains all teams that

  • have qualified for the DFB-Pokal through the state cups (24),
  • finished the last four places in the second Bundesliga in the 2009/10 season (4)
  • took the first four places in the 3rd division in the 2009/10 season (4)

Each of these teams was drawn a team from the professional pool, which included all the teams in the First Bundesliga and the 14 highest-ranked teams in the Second Bundesliga for the 2009/10 season. The teams of the amateur pot enjoy the home right.

In the 2nd round there will also be a draw from an amateur and a professional pot. Here, however, the teams that have been promoted to the Second Bundesliga are also considered amateur teams. Here, too, the amateur teams enjoy home rights. If one of the pots is exhausted, the remaining pot is drawn to the end; the team drawn first in a pairing always receives home rights.

From the round of 16 onwards, there will only be a single pot. An amateur team enjoys home rights when they play against a professional team, otherwise the team drawn first in a pairing.
