Deûlémont ( Dutch : Deulemonde ) is a French commune in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality has 1769 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and is part of the arrondissement of Lille . Deûlémont also belongs to the canton of Armentières .
geography
The municipality of Deûlémont extends over an area of 9.94 km² . The village lies on the banks of the Leie ( French: Lys ), which is the border river between Belgium and France . Deûlémont is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Warneton in the north, Comines in the northeast, Quesnoy-sur-Deûle in the southeast, Frelinghien in the south and Comines-Warneton (Belgium) in the northwest.
Etymology and history
Deûlémont was first mentioned in writing in 1066 in the founding document of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre in Lille as " Doulesmons ". The originally Flemish place name refers to the location of the place at the confluence of the Deûle in the Leie , from which the modern Dutch place name Deulemonde is derived.
During the First World War , Deûlémont was completely destroyed by fighting between the British and German military .
