In 1881 the Essener Turner Bund was founded. In 1899 some members saw their first soccer game, a year later Turnrat Otto Weber founded the soccer department of the ETB Schwarz-Weiß. In 1902 the club joined the Rheinisch-Westfälischer Spielverband. The ETB played on an old brick field of the Ernestine colliery in Essen-Stoppenberg. Members made the course playable. In 1903 the association moved to Kruppstrasse. The footballers built a football field from an old quarry. In 1909, the ETB rose as the only Essen club in the new ten-league and shortly afterwards again. In 1911 and 1912 the ETB was runner-up in the ten league.
In 1913 the ETB moved to Meisenburgstrasse. The ETB raised 50,000 marks through donations and share certificates, with which the club's premises were built. Fortuna Bredeney is now playing on the square on Meisenburgstrasse . The inauguration with national and international guests took place on May 25, 1913. In 1914 Albert Bollmann became the club's first national player. Bollmann played his first international match on April 5, 1914 against the Netherlands. Max Ring and Gustav Janus started playing again after the First World War . In 1920, Schwarz-Weiß Essen won the Ruhr District Championship. The ETB lost the game for the West German championship against VfTuR 1889 Munich-Gladbach with 2: 6 after extra time.
In 1922 the club won the Ruhrgau championship and came second again in the battle for the West German championship. The lease on Meisenburgstrasse was not extended. In 1922, the ETB bought the property of today's Uhlenkrugstadion and inaugurated it in the same year. The property measured 35 acres and cost 750,000 marks. Contrary to promises made, the city of Essen did not participate in the co-financing. Nevertheless, the ETB was able to raise the money through donations. The stadium with a capacity of 45,000 was one of the most modern stadiums in Germany. In 1923 the association became Ruhrgau-Meister and had 3,500 members (in the entire association). Due to the clean divorce , the departments had to spin off into independent associations in 1924.
In 1925 the club reached the intermediate round of the German championship ( FC Viktoria Forst 2: 1; FSV Frankfurt 1: 3). Izidor "Dori" Kürschner became the first full-time trainer. On New Year's Day 1925, the ETB defeated the Hungarian champions and former club Kürschners, the MTK Budapest , 2-1.
In 1932, the first men's team took part in an Easter tournament in Paris with the Red Star Olympique Paris and Kispet Budapest teams. In 1937, the five outsourced departments reunited to form an association. In the years 1938 to 1940 the ETB came second in the Gauliga Niederrhein three times in a row behind Fortuna Düsseldorf and narrowly failed to participate in the DM finals. In 1943 the game was stopped because of the Second World War .
After the resumption of game operations in 1945, the club achieved promotion to the association league in 1948 as the undefeated group champion. In addition, he was Essen city cup champion with a 2-1 win against Sportfreunde Katernberg, the second in the West German league. In 1949, the ETB was divided into the 2nd League West after the introduction of contract players . From 1951 to 1957 the ETB played in the top division, the Oberliga West.
A well-known catch song from this time on the melody of the Argonnerwaldlied reads:
But one thing, but one thing, mustn't happen,
black and white food mustn't go under.
In 1959 the ETB rose again to the league and won the DFB Cup on December 27, 1959 with a 5-2 win over Borussia Neunkirchen in Kassel in front of over 20,000 spectators. Before that, the club beat Westfalia Herne , Hamburger SV (with Uwe Seeler ) and Hertha BSC, among others . In 1960, the club rose again and a year later again in the league. In 1963 the ETB was seventh in the league, but was not taken into account for the Bundesliga . From 1963 on, the ETB played in the Regionalliga West together with Alemannia Aachen , Borussia Mönchengladbach and Rot-Weiss Essen . In 1967 the club was second in the Regionalliga West and took part in the promotion round to the 1st Bundesliga. The ascent was just missed, one point behind Borussia Neunkirchen.
In 1973 those responsible sold the Uhlenkrug Stadium to the city of Essen for 1.4 million DM. In 1974 the club was assigned to the newly founded 2. Bundesliga North and finished twelfth. The amateurs of the ETB took part in the German amateur championship. In the spring of 1976 and 1977, the team gambled away their promising position in the battle for promotion to the Bundesliga. In 1978 the club voluntarily gave up its license for the 2nd Bundesliga, as President Wolfgang Schmitz could no longer raise any money for the club as a result of his divorce. The ETB and the SC Rot-Weiss Essen signed a cooperation agreement, which contained a clause, according to which the ETB was no longer allowed to strive for integration into paid football for the next five years. In addition, the ETB players Urban Klausmann , Detlef Wiemers, Dietmar Klinger and Eckhard Kirschstein switched to local rivals RWE .
In 1980 the ETB was second in the amateur league in North Rhine-Westphalia behind 1. FC Bocholt , missed promotion and canceled the cooperation agreement with Rot-Weiss Essen. In 1981 the club reached the first main round of the DFB Cup. In 1985 the first team was runner-up behind local rivals RW Essen. RWE won the top game in front of 30,000 spectators on Easter Monday with 3: 1, while ETB was able to maintain its lead in the table for a long time. In 1988, the ETB reached the round of 16 of the DFB Cup and were eliminated 1-0 against Bundesliga club VfL Bochum , after having caused a sensation a round earlier with a 1-0 home win against then second division SV Darmstadt 98 under coach Klaus Schlappner .
In 1994 the ETB black and white narrowly missed the integration into the Regionalliga West / Südwest and was thus only fourth class for the first time in the club's history. In 2000 the soccer department celebrated its 100th birthday in the Essen hall. In 2001 the A- and B-Juniors played in the Regionalliga, the highest youth division in Germany. In 2003 the board started the WIR 2006 campaign and aimed for promotion to the regional league in 2006, but the 2005/06 season ended with a disappointing ninth place in the Oberliga Nordrhein. After a 6th place in the 2006/07 season, a place in the top four was sought for the 2007/08 season, which would have entitled to participate in the new Regionalliga West. At the end of the season, however, only the 5th place in the table jumped out. Thus, the ETB entered the newly formed fifth-rate NRW league in the 2008/09 season . In the premier season of this division, the team finished 4th in the table. In 2010, the Niederrhein Cup was won in the final against local rivals Rot-Weiss Essen . Black and White thus qualified for the first round of the 2010/11 DFB Cup , where they met the second division team Alemannia Aachen . The game was lost with 1: 2.
In 2011 and 2013 the C-youth of the ETB qualified for the regional league, ie the highest German division; In 2011, the B-youth missed promotion to the Bundesliga in two relegation games against Fortuna Düsseldorf .
After voluntarily withdrawing to the third class amateur league in 1978, the club has remained loyal to this league in various regional compositions. Only through the introduction of the regional league and the third league you only play fifth class. For a long time, the ETB has been the only association in Germany that has demonstrated such consistency at this level. The last athletic ascent or descent dates from 1961.
Financial problems
Already in the summer and in October 2009 there were no sponsorship funds due to the bankruptcy of Karstadt and a car dealership owned by Heinz Hofer, the club's chairman; this led to gaps in coverage. In October 2010 there were delays in payment of salaries, in April 2011 another gap in coverage of 200,000 euros became known. In the summer of 2012, major sponsors again dropped out or limited their funding. One of the reasons given was a lack of commitment to the association among the management staff. In October 2012, salaries could no longer be paid for the first time, and probably only small parts of the budget were secured. After speculation about the insolvency of the association had already arisen at the beginning of December 2012, the association announced at a general meeting on December 19 that it would have to submit an application for bankruptcy soon. The previously agreed restructuring concept could no longer be pursued after a main sponsor refused a loan of 50,000 euros. On February 5, 2013 it became known that the ETB is withdrawing the bankruptcy application due to the high willingness to donate in the vicinity of the association.
