List of railway lines in Brandenburg and Berlin
This list includes all long-distance and regional railway lines in the federal states of Brandenburg and Berlin . In addition, the route , the frequency at rush hour and the operating companies are listed.
General
The first railway lines in the Berlin - Brandenburg area were built from 1838 and initially only included the main lines starting from Berlin in a star shape . After the basic network was established up to the founding of the German Empire , the construction of the branch line began in the 1870s and the construction of the small railroad network from the 1890s. These mostly went off the main routes in the form of branch lines and connected remote towns and communities. In addition, suburban lines were expanded in the Berlin area from the 1890s, from which the Berlin S-Bahn network gradually emerged from 1924 .
After the Second World War, the victorious powers divided Berlin . While the inner-city local traffic was largely retained in the western half, long-distance traffic was reduced to an access route to the Zoo station for transit traffic . In the Brandenburg area, on the other hand, local and long-distance traffic initially remained almost unchanged, apart from the cut connections due to the new border. The thinning of the network began in the 1960s and 1970s when several branch lines were closed due to unprofitability. A second such wave occurred after reunification .
On the other hand, Deutsche Bahn, founded in 1994, tried to make local transport along the main routes more attractive. For marketing reasons, the first attempt to change the timetable was introduced on May 9, 1994, with the new Regional Express ( RE ) train type . The RE1 was the first line of its kind across Germany to run between Berlin Central Station (now Berlin Ostbahnhof ) and Frankfurt (Oder) . Gradually, the express train connections to RE lines and the other local trains were renamed regional trains ( RB ).
Long-distance and regional traffic is now again largely directed towards Berlin. Almost all long-distance trains within Brandenburg also pass through the Berlin urban area. While the traffic on the main routes is mainly covered by RE, IC and ICE lines, the branch line network is served by RB lines and trains of the same rank from private railway companies. Since 1996, all PTAs of public transport in the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) together. The top state planning is carried out jointly by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and the Brandenburg Ministry for Infrastructure and State Planning .
In addition, even the S-Bahn network will be added in the Berlin area, the corresponding line summary is already there dealt with.
