Location of the city of Wernigerode in the Harz district | ||
Wernigerode is a city and a state-approved resort in the Harz district ( Saxony-Anhalt ). After Hermann Löns , Wernigerode is also known as the colorful city on the Harz , as in the official city motto .
geography
Geographical location
Wernigerode is located on the northeast flank of the Harz , about 12 km east-northeast of the Brocken ( 1141.2 m above sea level ). The federal highways 6 and 244 as well as the German-Dutch holiday route Oranier-Route lead through it . In addition, the Halberstadt – Vienenburg railway , which connects Halle and Hanover , runs through the city. To the southwest lies the Landmann forest area .
The Holtemme flows through Wernigerode , into which the Zillierbach flows not far from the western gate , which is also known as the flood race immediately before the confluence. Furthermore, the Barrenbach flows north of the city through several ponds and flows into the Holtemme in the Minsleben district. The historic city center consists of the old town and the new town . The urban area also includes Hasserode , Nöschenrode , the residential areas Stadtfeld , Burgbreite , Harzblick and Charlottenlust as well as the districts of Benzingerode , Minsleben , Silstedt , Schierke and Reddeber .
The west-east expansion of the urban area including the incorporated districts is 22 km, the north-south expansion 14 km. The core city is about 257 m above sea level. NHN . The highest point of the urban area is the summit of the Brocken at 1141.2 m , the lowest is at about 215 m .
The Harz North Rim Fault runs right through Wernigerode .
City structure
Wernigerode is divided into the core city including the towns of Hasserode and Nöschenrode, which were incorporated before 1994, and five localities with local councils for the towns of Benzingerode , Minsleben , Reddeber , Schierke and Silstedt, which were incorporated from 1994 . Furthermore, the village belongs to the city of Wernigerode without an independent administration Drei Annen Hohne .
climate
Wernigerode is located in the transitional climate of the temperate climate zone . The average annual temperature is 9.5 degrees Celsius and the average annual rainfall is 500 millimeters.
The warmest months are June to August with an average of 16.0 to 18.3 degrees Celsius and the coldest December to February with an average of 1.1 to 2.1 degrees Celsius.
With an average of 54 millimeters, most of the precipitation falls in July, the least with 30 millimeters in February.
The climate, more precisely the amount of precipitation and temperature, is influenced by the uphill rain caused by the Harz low mountain range . Since the city is on the rain shadow side ( leeward side ) of the Harz, less precipitation arrives there than in similar climatically temperate regions without "protection" by mountains. The occasional hair dryer that occurs in the process also increases the temperature.
According to DIN 1055, Wernigerode is to be classified in snow load zone 3.

history
Origin of the city
There are no written sources about the exact origin of the place. According to the latest research, there are no original relationships - as assumed by Eduard Jacobs and Walther Grosse - with the Corvey Monastery ( Weser ) and the local abbot Warin , but the place name indicates a protected clearing settlement.
The first settlement area was the Klint, where there was a low castle , the so-called Schnakenburg . In 1805 the remains of this castle complex were demolished, as part of which only the Gadenstedt house (Oberpfarrkirchhof 13) from 1582 remains . At the time of the first settlement there was still the typical Harz forest on the heights of the Klint, which first had to be cleared, hence the name part "-rode".
The place was first mentioned in 1121 in connection with Count Adalbert zu Haimar from the area near Hildesheim , who from then on called himself Count von Wernigerode . They can be traced back to the Drübeck Monastery until at least 1230. Wernigerode Castle was first mentioned as "castrum" in 1213. On April 17, 1229, the settlement was granted city rights based on the model of Goslar . In 2004 Wernigerode celebrated the anniversary of being awarded city rights 775 years ago.
With the arrival of new residents from the surrounding villages, a new settlement was formed on the northeastern edge of the old town in the 13th century - the later Neustadt , an arable town that lay outside the surrounding wall of the old town. The Johanniskirche was built as the parish church of the new town of Wernigerode in the last third of the 13th century in the Romanesque style.
From the late Middle Ages to the modern age
After the male line of the Counts of Wernigerode died out due to the death of Count Heinrich in 1429, Wernigerode became the seat of the Counts of Stolberg , who ruled here for centuries. During the Peasants' War in 1525, several surrounding monasteries were looted and partly destroyed, in particular the Himmelpforten monastery in today's Hasserode district.
Around 20 people were sentenced to death at the stake in witch trials from 1521 to 1608 in Wernigerode . The victims of the witch hunts include Andreas Meinicke from Eckertal (1581), Mette Fliß from Drübeck (1583) and Katharina Bernburg from Rohrsheim (1597).
Looting during the Thirty Years War and destruction by fires brought great suffering to the population.
From 1658 there was the Gräfliche , from 1893 Princely Consistory Stolberg-Wernigerode , a media consistory for the management of the Lutheran Church in the county of Wernigerode . After the establishment of the United Evangelical Church in Prussia in 1821, the Lutheran parishes in the area of the county belonged to its church province of Saxony . The media consistory, however, continued to exist with regional responsibility for these parishes until it was dissolved in 1931, but was subordinate to the provincial consistory in Magdeburg.
In 1714, Count Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode had to recognize the sovereignty of Brandenburg-Prussia over the county of Wernigerode in a recess .
From 1807 to 1813 Wernigerode was integrated into the city canton of Wernigerode of the Kingdom of Westphalia before the city was assigned to the newly formed Prussian district of Osterwieck of the Prussian province of Saxony . Only after an objection from Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode was Wernigerode again the seat of its own district within the administrative district of Magdeburg in 1825 .
On March 29, 1847, part of the city, especially the Heideviertel, fell victim to a major fire.
In the second half of the 19th century, in addition to tourism, industrial development began in Wernigerode (including machine and tool construction, electric motors, pharmaceutical products, chocolate, stationery, building materials), which led to a significant upswing in the city as a tourist center and business location .
20th century
During the Second World War , the Rautal-Werken GmbH , which had been expanded into a modern light metal foundry in 1938, manufactured parts for the armaments industry, mainly by forced laborers and concentration camp prisoners . They lived in a barrack camp on the Ziegenberg . In 1942 another barrack camp was built at Veckenstedter Weg 23 , which in 1943 was converted into a satellite camp (camouflage name “Richard”) of the Buchenwald concentration camp . From the initial 95 prisoners, the occupancy increased to 800 people, who were mainly used in the construction of air raid tunnels on the Galgenberg . The prisoners from Veckenstedter Weg were transferred to the “Steinerne Renne” camp in December 1944, which was used by the Wernig works in the Hasserode district . They belonged to the production complex of the Dessau Junkers Group , which in 1944 received the approval to move individual departments from Magdeburg and Köthen to the buildings of the Argenta chocolate factory in the Wernigerode suburb of Hasserode. Parts of the Jumo 004 jet engine were to be manufactured there. Shortly before the arrival of the US troops, the 500 prisoners were sent on a death march in the direction of the Theresienstadt concentration camp , where only 57 arrived alive.
From September 1, 1937 to May 13, 1945, the Lebensbornheim Harz was located at Brockenweg 1 and was operated by the SS organization Lebensborn eV.
During “ Big Week ” USAAF B-17 bombers attacked the city on February 22, 1944 as a “target of opportunity”. Over 200 people were killed in the air attack with 19 machines. Many buildings in the city, especially in the Neustadt around the Johanniskirche, were destroyed, including the prestigious hotel "Zum Bären" at Breite Straße 78, which was used as a military hospital and whose two uppermost half-timbered floors were never rebuilt. The western part of the former orangery with the palm house and the pleasure garden were badly damaged.
At the beginning of April 1945, Colonel Gustav Petri, as city commander, received the order to defend the city against the advancing US Army units . Because he refused to do this, the city was occupied on April 11 with little resistance. Petri was then legally shot dead at Drei Annen Hohne on April 12th . The city remained unscathed.
In 1970 a stone meteorite of type H5 weighing 24.3 grams was found in Wernigerode . It was in the attic of a house whose roof had been destroyed in World War II.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver, a red castle with a tinned wall, a higher two-lined central tower with a pointed roof and pommel between two single-lined tinned towers, a red trout in the cloverleaf-shaped gate with raised portcullis."
The oldest surviving representation of the coat of arms of the city of Wernigerode is on a seal on a certificate from 1309. The color (red on silver or white) appears in the 16th century. The portcullis in the upper three-pass arch appears for the first time in a city seal from 1610.
As with all coats of arms, the symbolism of the coat of arms is to be interpreted heraldically. The castle is not the image of the palace, but symbolizes the defensive strength of the city. The trout featured in the coat of arms today is borrowed from one of the coats of arms used by the Counts of Wernigerode, which shows two fish.
Town twinning
Wernigerode maintains partnerships with:
- This partnership agreement was renewed in 1991 due to the new political situation.
- Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , since September 1989
- The annual wine and beer festivals, the Neustadt wine festival in Wernigerode and the Wernigerode beer festival in Neustadt are two examples of the cultural exchange between the cities.
- Cisnădie / Heltau in Transylvania ( Romania ), since August 2002
- The aim of this partnership is to help the people of Transylvania to integrate into the EU. It is worth mentioning the Christmas in a shoebox , which is carried out in all parts of the world.
- Hội An , Vietnam, since July 2013
- This city partnership was awarded the German Sustainability Prize in the category “Municipal Partnerships” in 2018 .
Culture and sights
overview
Wernigerode offers many tourist attractions (see below → Buildings ). The city center consists largely of half-timbered houses from Lower Saxony . The neo-Gothic Wernigerode Castle towers prominently over the city and can be seen from a distance. The area around Wernigerode is also charming: The Harz narrow-gauge railway starts here , which runs via Schierke to Brocken and across the Harz to Nordhausen in Thuringia . In 2006, the second state horticultural show in Saxony-Anhalt took place in Wernigerode .
theatre
The "Castle Festival" is held annually in the inner courtyard of Wernigerode Castle. They are an event of the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra Wernigerode. The highlights are the performances of operas and operettas such as Die Zauberflöte , Falstaff or Zar und Zimmermann .
Cultural and leisure facilities
The "Harzer Kultur- und Kongresszentrum", "KiK" for short, for: "Culture in the Congress Center", is a complex with a large hall (600 seats) and several conference rooms that are ideal for various events. It is located in the center of Wernigerode. The “Remise” of the Wernigerode Art and Culture Association is used for small-scale concerts, readings and other performances.
The Christianental wildlife park is located in Nöschenrode below the palace. There are indigenous, sometimes rare wild animals such as the lynx . Since 2005 there is the "Hasseröder Ferienpark", a commercial excursion and holiday destination with a fun pool and other leisure activities.
Another attraction is the so-called planet path . It illustrates our planetary system in an easily understandable way: the distances to the sun are shown on a scale of 1: 1 billion. The tour ends at the Harz Planetarium.

music
Wernigerode is well-known in the choral field and is also known as the “choir town”. The state high school for music is located here with four choirs, including the internationally known radio youth choir Wernigerode , which was founded in 1951 by Friedrich Krell .
In Wernigerode, the first special classes for music education were created at the EOS “ Gerhart Hauptmann ” in 1971 (since 1991 state high school for music). In addition to two children's choirs, the Wernigerode girls' choir under the direction of Steffen Drebenstedt is a well-known ensemble. Of former choir members of the Radio Youth Choir was established in April 2003 under the direction of Peter Habermann the Chamber Choir Wernigerode , among other things, the 2007 Grand Prix of Choirs at ZDF won.
Since 1999, an "International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival & Competition" has been held every two years with an international choir directing seminar under the auspices of the Interkultur Association. The city organizes a Harz Choir Festival alternately every two years.
Several amateur and school choirs and ensembles are active in Wernigerode: the "Wernigerode Singakademie", the "Frauenchor Wernigerode", the "Männerchor Wernigerode von 1848", the "Männergesangverein Hasserode 1865", the "Kinderchor Wernigerode" at the Landesmusikgymnasium, the vocal group " Ars Vivendi ”, as well as the choirs of the Stadtfeld grammar school and the Gerhart Hauptmann grammar school.
The Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra Wernigerode under the direction of Christian Fitzner is one of the few small-town orchestras still in existence that is of national importance. A regular cultural highlight is the "Wernigerode Castle Festival" as part of the Saxony-Anhalt Music Festival .
The "Happy Groove Orchestra" under the direction of Thomas Schicker is a Wernigerode big band with a classic line-up.
The samba group "Baraban", which regularly participates in the Wernigerode town hall festival, is known nationwide.
The district music school "Andreas Werckmeister", the music school Schicker with different locations and the "Turbine 19" maintain ensembles of different styles of music.
Buildings
lock
Until 1929, Wernigerode Castle was the residence of the Counts of Stolberg- Wernigerode, who were ruled in 1890. Today it is a museum, particularly for art and cultural history of the 19th century.
town hall
The dominant building on the market square was first mentioned in 1277 as the gimnasio vel theatro (game and court house). The massive construction of the original "Spelhus" suggests that even then a later increase with half-timbering was considered, because in fact nothing was changed on the foundations during its later expansion. Even the ogival Gothic entrance door to the ground floor is still there today. With the addition of a storey in 1492, the "Spielhaus" received a large ballroom that could be entered via an outside staircase on the west side. Equipped with a high gable, the Wernigerode town hall could now not only exist next to the patrician houses on the market, but also became the dominant center of the market square. The upward striving half-timbered beams took the whole of the previous clumsiness. The building, which was completed in 1497, was more in keeping with the bourgeoisie, who demanded urban representation. In 1497, two slender half-timbered towers were placed in front of the broad Low German gables and, as a counterpart to these vertical elements, a horizontal band in the lower compartments, "curly Andrew's crosses", which appear here for the first time in Wernigerode and were then taken over in other half-timbered houses in the city. It got its present appearance after a fire (1521) and a further renovation in the years 1539 to 1544. The carved figures with which the storey and roof overhangs are decorated are particularly remarkable. It is considered one of the most beautiful town halls in Europe.
Churches
- St. Sylvestri Church in the Oberpfarrkirchhof
- The city's oldest parish church, which was initially dedicated to St. George . It was converted into a Benedictine monastery by the Counts of Wernigerode in 1265 , who gave it a second patron saint , Holy New Year's Eve . The now Protestant church still has this dual patronage. The Maria-Magdalena - Antependium , a whitework from around 1250, is worth seeing. In the 19th century, the church received its neo-Gothic appearance. The designs come from the building councilor Carl Frühling (1839–1912). The pulpit of the church, showing Johannes , Petrus , Paulus and Jakobus , was created in 1883 by the local court sculptor Gustav Kuntzsch based on models by Peter Vischer the Elder . The chairs also come from the Kuntzsch workshop. The altar, also made by Kuntzsch in 1883, was removed in 1932 and replaced by an altar from the 15th century, which had stood in the Liebfrauenkirche until 1751 and then in the Nikolaikirche, which was demolished in 1873. The Gadenstedt house from 1582 is at Oberpfarrkirchhof 13 .
- Evangelical parish church for the new town of Wernigerode, the oldest preserved church in the town, built between 1265 and 1279 and structurally modified at the end of the 15th century, in large parts still preserved in the original. The four-winged Marien carved altar with holy women in the altar crown from 1415 and the Ladegast organ from 1885, which is also regularly used for concerts (“Organ for the Night”), are significant .
- Kreuzkirche
- The Church of the Cross, which is part of the independent Evangelical Lutheran Church and belongs to the church district of Saxony-Thuringia and is under monument protection, was consecrated on October 19, 1873 as a place of worship of the Old Lutheran Church . The interior of the towerless half-timbered building comes from the demolished Nicolaikirche, such as the pulpit and the galleries from 1611. The small bell in the roof turret was cast in 1300. During the time of National Socialism , the Old Lutherans offered members of the Confessing Church the opportunity to hold their services in the Kreuzkirche. The well-known Evangelical Uniate Pastor Martin Niemöller , who was persecuted by the National Socialists, and the later Evangelical Uniate Bishop Otto Dibelius preached in the Kreuzkirche. After the end of the war, the Confessing Church thanked them with a late Gothic cross, which is still in the church today.
- Former parish church for the Burgstrasse district and parts of Nöschenrode, destroyed by fire in 1751, then rebuilt. The tower can be climbed. Sold to a cultural foundation since 2018, rededicated on February 3, 2019.
- late medieval building with baroque furnishings worth seeing. Built around 1400 as an atonement chapel, with baroque paintings from 1636, bell tower from 1710.
- Chapel built around 1350, located on Ilsenburger Strasse north-west of the old town, with a bell tower from 1635.
- Wernigerode's only Catholic church today was built in 1905/06 on Sägemühlengasse. The neo-Romanesque basilica is built in the basic shape of a cross and has two towers on the west side. Today the church is the seat of the parish of St. Bonifatius in the dean's office in Halberstadt , which stretches from the Großer Fallstein to the Brocken.
- New Apostolic Church on Lüttgenfeldstrasse in the Hasserode district.
- Christ Church in Lutherstrasse in the district of Hasserode
- The Christ Church Wernigerode, located in the middle of the district of Hasserode, is the religious home of the Evangelical Christ Congregation Wernigerode-Schierke, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009. The neo-Romanesque building, which is regularly used for church services, community festivals and concerts, is the focus of an ecumenically oriented community activity that has its roots in the community of the former Prussian colony "Friedrichsthal". Christians of the Lutheran and Reformed denominations had gathered together in a previous building of the Concordia Church since 1778.
- Konkordienkirche am Langen Stieg in the district of Hasserode
- The building erected in 1847 was rebuilt in the 1930s and serves as a kindergarten for the Christ Congregation.
Other structures
- The smallest house in town
- Today there is a museum in Kochstrasse.
- The crooked house
- Former Teichmühle - a half-timbered house that has sunk on one side over the course of several centuries due to partial erosion by the underground mill ditch. Today it is the seat of an association.
- The Krummel house
- Breite Straße 72, also a half-timbered house, which the Berlin- born grain dealer Heinrich Krummel had built in 1674 in the late baroque style. Due to the carved wooden facade in front of it, the half-timbered structure can hardly be recognized as such. The ten reliefs under the windows - "continental allegories " - which were carved after copper engravings by the Flemish engraver Adriaen Collaert (1560–1618), stand out from the wood carving of an unknown artist . In 1875 the ground floor was fundamentally rebuilt as a shop and lavishly decorated by the local wood sculptor Gustav Kuntzsch with all sorts of ornaments and five full sculptures on consoles . Today the house houses a gastronomic business.
- The old coin
- one of the few preserved half-timbered houses with a stone ground floor from the 16th century, built by Valentin von Sundhausen , today houses the Harz library and the city archive.
- The western gate tower
- was built around 1250 as a city gate, was formerly part of the city wall and at 41 meters is the largest of the defensive towers still standing.
- The half-shell tower
- on the cloth maker frames is an old city wall tower, which was given a slate roof again in 1889 at the instigation of Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode . There is a second tower of this type in the vicinity of the former princely outbuilding.
- Imperial Tower
- on the Armeleuteberg is a lookout tower built in 1902 at the expense of Edmund Lührmann with a good view of the castle, the Harburg and the northern Harz foreland to Halberstadt.
