The Cesta I. triedy 66 ( Slovak for '1st order street 66'), I / 66 for short , is a 1st order street in Slovakia . It is located in the middle of the country and is considered a continuation of the Hungarian main street from Budapest. From the Hungarian border near Šahy to Kováčová near Zvolen it runs approximately in a south-north direction, from Banská Bystrica in a west-east direction, from Vernár again approximately in a south-north direction. In the first section to Kováčová it is part of the European route 77 .

On August 1, 2015, the Vernár – Polish border section at Tatranská Javorina was incorporated into I / 66, which was previously part of the simultaneously shortened I / 67.

course

The I / 66 begins as a continuation of the Hungarian main road 2 at the former border crossing Šahy-Parassapuszta and crosses the river Ipeľ in the city of Šahy , right through the eastern foothills of the Danube hill country . From around Dudince (border Nitriansky kraj / Banskobystrický kraj ) the road runs between the Schemnitz Mountains on the west side and the Krupinská planina or Javorie on the east side, through the village of Hontianske Nemce and the town of Krupina . It follows the valleys of the rivers Štiavnica to Hontianske Nemce, Krupinica between Devičie and Babiná and then Neresnica to Zvolen .

It circles Zvolen from the south and west and follows the valley of the Hron river in the Zvolenská kotlina basin , but initially only as far as Kováčová , as the rest of the route, formerly part of I / 66 , is interrupted by the R1 expressway . The road reappears in Banská Bystrica and changes direction to the east, parallel to the Hron River. The Low Tatras rises to the end on the north side, on the south side there are the Poľana and Muránska planina . As far as Brezno it goes around the villages, from Brezno it goes through more. Shortly after the Besník pass ( 994  m nm ) it goes into the Vernár pass ( 1053  m nm ) and behind Vernár the historical landscape of Spiš begins ; Places crossed in the Podtatranská kotlina basin are z. B. Poprad , Kežmarok and Spišská Belá before it branches off towards the Bela Tatras . Here it forms part of the so-called Cesta Slobody (Street of Freedom), a main road that connects Slovak Tatra towns and ends at Tatranská Javorina at the former border crossing Lysá Poľana-Bukowina Tatrzańska.

Expansion plans

A section of the R3 expressway is planned in the southern part from Šahy to Zvolen, but no specific construction plan is available.

Oddities

Motorcyclists meet every year in Šahy for a ride over Cesta I. triedy 66 , which they refer to as the Slovak Route 66 based on US Route 66. The book In the Name of Route 66 - New Travel in Europe tells of this meeting and other special features along the road.
