John Campbell (politician, 1765)

John Campbell (born September 11, 1765 in Port Tobacco Village , Charles County , Province of Maryland , †  June 23, 1828 in Charles County, Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1801 and 1811 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Campbell attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he held several local offices. He also embarked on a political career. In the late 1790s he joined the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton . He served in the Maryland Senate for three years .

In the 1800 congressional election , Campbell was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded George Dent on March 4, 1801 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1811 . During his time in Congress, the twelfth amendment was ratified in 1804 . In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase significantly expanded United States territory.

After serving in the US House of Representatives, John Campbell served as a judge on the Guardianship Court for Orphans in Charles County. He died on June 23, 1828 on the Charleston farm in Charles County.
