With the collegium sapientiae et pietatis , founded in 1552 as a Protestant school for scholars, one of the oldest grammar schools in Austria (today the European high school ) and directed by Hieronymus Megiser from 1593 to 1601 , Klagenfurt had an early academic history, but no university history.

In 1964, the Carinthian University Association, which still exists today as a development association, was established . Instead of the original “Klagenfurt Business School” project, the “Klagenfurt University of Education” was planned in 1968. On January 21, 1970, the National Council passed the federal law on their establishment. In the following year, the so-called pre - stage building (architect: Roland Rainer ) was handed over to the university; The first doctorate took place in 1972 .

From 1973 to 1978 the scientific diploma , teacher training and doctoral studies were established ; including the subjects philosophy , pedagogy , history , German Studies , English Studies and American Studies , Romance Languages , Slavic studies , mathematics , geography and linguistics . Regular study operations began in 1973 and the main building was erected in 1974–1977. The University Organization Act of 1975 brought promotion to the University of Education ; The first graduation took place in 1977 .

From 1983 onwards, the fields of applied business administration and applied computer science were developed and expanded. In 1993 the name was changed to University of Klagenfurt ; at the same time a faculty for cultural studies and a faculty for economics and computer science were established.

The extension (south wing) was put into operation in 2000. Through the implementation of the University Act 2002, the inter-university IFF institute, founded in 1978/79, became the third faculty on January 1, 2004, the one for interdisciplinary research and advanced training (Klagenfurt, Vienna, Graz). On October 1st, 2004 the university, under the rectorate of Günther Hödl , chose the name Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt , whereby the nickname "Alpen-Adria-" represents an optional addition (cognomen) and not a formal renaming.

In 2006 the University of Klagenfurt had around 7,200 students with 65 professorships and about as many associate professorships. The most popular subjects were business administration (including economics and law), psychology and media and communication studies . Since 2007, the university has had a fourth technical faculty (focus on information and communication technology , networked & autonomous systems and applied computer science ), which started research operations in conjunction with the neighboring Lakeside Science & Technology Park . In 2012, the number of students exceeded the 10,000 mark; the proportion of international students is now around 20 percent.

Since 2015 the university has been holding commencement speeches based on the Anglo-Saxon model at its graduation ceremonies . Previous speakers have included Sabine Herlitschka , Josef Winkler , August-Wilhelm Scheer and Johanna Rachinger . The Federal President , formerly Heinz Fischer , now Alexander Van der Bellen , is a regular guest at sub auspiciis Praesidentis doctorates .

campus

The campus extends over 11 hectares at the west end of Klagenfurt (for comparison: that of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration covers 9 hectares) and combines features of an urban European with those of a US campus university: to the east it is a 40-minute walk along the Lend Canal, which began in 1527 to the historical center of Klagenfurt , shaped by the Renaissance , to the west a 10 minute walk to the shores of Lake Wörthersee , a classic summer holiday destination. In addition to the corresponding water sports and leisure opportunities, which are promoted through courses offered by the University Sports Institute (USI), there are also hiking, climbing and skiing opportunities in the Austrian and Slovenian Alps .

Together with the adjacent Lakeside Science & Technology Park, a 25 hectare start-up and spin-off park, the university campus forms the so-called Lakeside District .

On the occasion of the university's 40th anniversary, a rowing race based on Oxbridge models, The Boat Race , was held in 2010. The eighth of the University of Klagenfurt was able to clearly win the competition against that of the University of Vienna on a sprint route through the eastern bay of Lake Wörthersee (from the Nautilus rowing club to Maria Loretto Castle ).

An environmental management system based on the European EMAS III ( Eco Management and Audit Scheme ) standard was implemented for the entire campus in 2016 . The University of Klagenfurt received the Sustainability Award from the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management. The university is also a member of the Alliance of Sustainable Universities, founded in 2012, and in 2017 received the Federal Prize for Workplace Health Promotion in the "Large Company" category.

From 2016 to 2018, the central wing and the north wing plus outside areas were subjected to a refurbishment budgeted for € 26 million (building refurbishment area 13,000 m²), which emphasizes the campus character and shows the university in a new light. In 2019, the university was shortlisted for the Prix Versailles - Campuses , which was awarded under the auspices of UNESCO , together with buildings from the University of Chicago in Hong Kong , Barnard College in New York City , Stanford University , the School of Planning and Architecture in Vijayawada and of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow , which emerged as the winner.
