About this picture

Lüssow is a municipality in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). The community is administered by the Güstrow-Land Office, which is based in the non-official city of Güstrow . Lüssow, Karow and Strenz belong to the municipality of Lüssow.

geography

The municipality of Lüssow is located in the triangle of the cities of Güstrow, Bützow and Schwaan , 30 kilometers south of Rostock . The area around Lüssow is slightly hilly; to the south it falls to the lowland of the Nebel and the parallel Bützow-Güstrow Canal . The approximately 15-kilometer-long Mühlbach (also called Hohensprenzer Mühlbach ) runs through the municipality of Lüssow and runs parallel to the Warnow to the west - but flows south in the opposite direction.

Lüssow is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Mistorf in the north, Sarmstorf in the east, Güstrow in the south, Gülzow-Prüzen in the southwest and Groß Schwiesow in the west.

history

The place name Lüssow with the typical ending -ow is of Slavic origin and means something like "place of Lu'sa". Another interpretation of the name results from the Slavic root word "Lysa" (= "meadow") as "meadow place", which seems logical because of the location on a flat, sandy elevation in the Mühlbachwiesen. The name recalls the presence of Slavic tribes ( Obodriten , Warnower, Kessiner) who settled in Mecklenburg since the 5th and 6th centuries AD. In the 12th century, after the failed Wendekreuzzug of 1147, the predominantly peaceful German colonization of the country took place, mainly by settlers from Westphalia . Lüssow was first mentioned in a document in 1229. The village church also dates from this time.

In the 1970s, with the construction of apartments and the dairy cattle facility on the road towards Groß Schwiesow, the development of the village of Lüssow into a "socialist model village" began.

In the district of Karow there is a castle in the neo-baroque style. In the former caretaker's house not far from the castle, there was a polytechnic high school until 1989, then a hunting school for a few years.

The proximity to the district town of Güstrow has made the community attractive for home builders for several years.

Attractions

  • Neo-Baroque manor house with gate and farm buildings in Karow
  • Drawbridge from the end of the 19th century over the Bützow-Güstrow Canal , about two kilometers south of the village, on the road to Parum.

Lüssow village church

See main article: Dorfkirche Lüssow

The church is a large, single-nave hall church built mainly from field stones in the transition style between Romanesque and Gothic. The building consists of a squat tower with a square floor plan, the two-bay nave, the somewhat narrower choir, an octagonal choir closure and several smaller extensions. The choir and nave were built in the middle of the 13th century, the tower in the 15th century. A comprehensive reconstruction took place in the second half of the 19th century. Several grave slabs are embedded in the floor of the choir and the nave. The oldest is dated 1386. The altar, baptismal font, pulpit, the stalls in the nave, gallery and organ all date from the 19th century. From 1967 to 1970 Joachim Gauck was pastor in Lüssow.

Transport links
