List of mountain groups in the Eastern Alps (according to AVE)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of mountain groups in the Eastern Alps includes all 75 mountain groups in the Eastern Alps , which are defined in the Alpine Association of the Eastern Alps (AVE) from 1984.

The Eastern Alps are divided into four sub-areas to which the individual mountain groups are assigned. There are the Northern , Central , Southern and Western Eastern Alps. With 27 groups each, the Northern and Central Eastern Alps form the largest part. There are 15 groups in the Southern Eastern Alps and six in the Western Eastern Alps.

The six countries Germany , Italy , Liechtenstein , Austria , Switzerland and Slovenia have a share in the Eastern Alps . In the far east the AVE border still runs through Hungary with a very small proportion . With 57 groups Austria has the largest share. It is followed by Italy with 25 and Switzerland with ten. There are seven mountain groups in Germany and three in Slovenia. Liechtenstein and Hungary each have a share in one group.

The only four-thousand-meter peak and thus the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps is the Piz Bernina at 4049  m . This makes the Bernina group the highest of all the Eastern Alps. This is followed by the Ortler Alps with the Ortler ( 3905  m ) as the highest mountain in South Tyrol. The third highest group is the Glockner group with the highest mountain in Austria: Großglockner ( 3798  m ). Another 22 groups reach a height of over 3000 meters. The only group in the Northern Eastern Alps with a 3000 meter is the Lechtal Alps with the Parseierspitze ( 3036  m ). 39 groups are over 2000 meters high. Seven of the groups exceed the height of 1000 meters. Only one group does not reach this mark, the Vienna Woods . Its highest mountain, the Schöpfl , is only 893  m high.

  • AVE no .: Indicates the numbering of the group according to AVE. Numbers with lower case letters are 1984 subdivided groups. Groups with lowercase letters were a unit prior to 1984.
  • Name: Name of the mountain group. For group names that consist of two mountain groups and of which individual articles are available in the German-language Wikipedia, both are listed.
  • Map: If available, mountain group map or location in the entire Alps.
  • Location: belonging to the sub-area.
  • Country: countries with a share in the mountain group; listed according to the respective area share.
  • Highest Mountain: Name of the highest mountain in the group. If a group consists of two mountain groups, the highest peak of the second mountain group is also named. The higher mountain comes first.
