The county is located in the extreme southwest corner of Kansas, borders Colorado to the west, Oklahoma to the south and covers an area of ​​1,891 square kilometers with no significant body of water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Stanton County and Stevens County .

Morton County was formed on February 20, 1886. It was named after Oliver P. Morton , a US politician and governor of Indiana during the American Civil War .

As of the 2000 census , Morton County had 3,496 people in 1306 households and 961 families in Morton County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.39 percent white, 0.20 percent African American, 1.14 percent Native American, 1.06 percent Asian and 7.52 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races.
