The 1997/98 NHL season was the 81st season in the National Hockey League . 26 teams played 82 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Detroit Red Wings for the second time in a row after a 4-0 success (" Sweep ") in the final series against the Washington Capitals .

It was the first season for the Carolina Hurricanes , the former Hartford Whalers , after their move. With the Edmonton Oilers , the fourth former WHA team was almost relocated to Houston. However, a group of investors prevented the sale.

For the first time in the history of the NHL, a game was not played on North American soil. The season started with a view to the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano in the Japanese capital Tokyo . There the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim met the Vancouver Canucks . In order to promote the first-time participation of the NHL players in "Olympia", the format was changed in the NHL All-Star Game . From then on, the North Americans competed against an international selection of NHL players.
