The Olympic ice hockey tournament of the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , Italy , is also the 23rd ice hockey world championship and 34th European championship . It took place from January 26th to February 4th. The games were played in the Olympic Ice Stadium in Cortina and in the Stadio Apollonio . Ten teams took part in this tournament. It was initially played in three preliminary round groups; the first two placed reached the final round, the remaining teams played for places 7 to 10. To represent Germany , an internal German qualification had to be played out first.

On their Olympic debut, the USSR immediately won the gold medal and the second World Cup title after 1954 , while the dethroned Olympic or world champion from Canada had to be content with the bronze medal behind the USA .

German domestic qualification

After the representatives of the ice hockey section of the GDR and the West German Ice Sports Association (DEV) each watched games between two West (in Mannheim) and East German teams, there was no meeting of those responsible on October 30, 1955 in the Berlin hotel "Newa" Agreement regarding the participants of an all-German team. The GDR delegation advocated seven to eight East German athletes, while the DEV only wanted to accept two to three East German candidates in the 17-strong team. The ice hockey section of the GDR proposed to the West German ice sports association for November 16 a comparison between the teams of the GDR and the Federal Republic in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle. After that, the common Olympic team should be set up after the playful performances shown. As a result, the game committee of the German ice sports support team decided that regardless of the outcome of the game, they were no longer willing to enter into renewed negotiations about the composition of an all-German Olympic team. After the game, the GDR's proposal to take five GDR players and a goalkeeper with them was rejected and it was decided to send only a pure DEV team to Cortina d'Ampezzo.
