Sherman County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Goodland .

The county is located almost in the extreme northwest of Kansas, borders Colorado to the west , is about 45 km from Nebraska to the north , and covers an area of 2,735 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cheyenne County , Rawlins County , Thomas County , Logan County, and Wallace Counties .

Sherman County was formed on September 20, 1886. It was named after William T. Sherman , one of the most famous generals of the Northern States in the American Civil War and secretary of war in the post-war period .

According to the 2000 census , Sherman County had 6,760 people in 2,758 households and 1,781 families in Sherman County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.83 percent white, 0.36 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.16 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.99 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 8.45 percent of the population.
Of the 2,758 households, 29.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.8 percent were married couples living together, 6.0 percent were single mothers, and 35.4 percent were non-families. 29.2 percent of all households were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 11.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 17.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 104.5 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 101.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 32,684 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,824. Males had a median income of $ 28,012 versus $ 20,927 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,761.
