  • April 20 : The VII Olympic Games are opened by King Albert in the Belgian city of Antwerp . Water polo player and epee fencer Victor Boin is the first athlete to swear the Olympic oath written by Pierre de Coubertin . For the first time, the Olympic flag with the Olympic rings is hoisted. The games last until September 12th . 156 competitions (132 for men, 8 for women, 2 mixed competitions and 14 open competitions) are held in 22 sports / 29 disciplines. As in 1908 in London , winter sports are again on the program at these summer games: figure skating and, for the first time, ice hockey . Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey are excluded from the games.
    • The Italian Nedo Nadi wins five gold medals in six fencing competitions, three of them together with his brother Aldo .
    • The oldest medalist of all time is the Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn , who receives a silver medal, at the age of 72 years and 279 days.
