background

The title was a trigger for Cale's later musical success. Little did he know that Clapton was covering the piece before Cale heard the interpretation on the radio in 1970. In an interview with Mojo magazine , he said:

“I was dirt poor, not making enough to eat and I wasn't a young man. I was in my thirties, so I was very happy. It was nice to make some money. "

“I was very poor, I didn't earn enough to buy food, and I wasn't a young man. I was in my thirties so I was very happy. It was nice to make money. "

Cale's friend and producer Audie Ashworth encouraged him to take advantage of the huge commercial success of the Clapton recording and record an album. In 1972 he released his debut album Naturally . The single After Midnight reached number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the same year . In 2001 a live recording of the song appeared on the album Live .

Eric Clapton's adaptation

When Clapton was working with Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett , Delaney Bramlett introduced the music to Cale to Clapton. After Midnight is one of many Cale songs Clapton covered throughout his career. Clapton's first release from his eponymous debut album reached number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. The recording also featured Bobby Whitlock as singer and on Hammond organ, Jim Gordon on drums, Delaney Bramlett on rhythm guitar, Carl Radle on bass, Leon Russell on piano, Jim Price on trumpet and Bobby Keys on saxophone. In 1987 Clapton took up the title again for a beer advertisement for the Michelob brand . A live rendition with Steve Winwood was released on Live from Madison Square Garden in 2009 .
