All-NBA team

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

All-NBA Team (German: team of the NBA selection) is the name of an award given annually to the best players from the last season of the National Basketball Association (NBA) since the league was founded in 1946/47 .

A jury currently comprising 100 journalists selects the winners. Each of the jurors names three teams, whose players get five points for each choice into the first team, three points into the second team and one point into the third team. Since the 1955/56 season , the teams consist of two forwards , a center and two guards . Previously, the award did not take these player positions into account. The players with the most points in their positions are distributed among the three teams according to the ranking of the points received. In the event of a tie in one position (before 1955/56 only in position 5) the team concerned is expanded to six or more members, with each team having at least five players and thus the total number of excellent players per year can vary. Compared to the NBA All-Defensive Team, however, this happens relatively rarely and so far only occurred in the 1951/52 season , when the All-NBA First Team consisted of six players and game positions were not taken into account with George Mikan , Ed Macauley , Paul Arizin , Bob Cousy , Bob Davies and Dolph Schayes .

In the seasons 1946/47 to 1987/88 only two teams were elected.

Importance and intent compared to the all-star game

The importance of the All-NBA Team is to be rated higher than a place in the All-Star Team , because on the one hand the choice takes less into account the popularity of a player than his athletic qualities and his position and on the other hand due to a lower number of places (between ten and 15 versus twenty to 24 positions). In addition, the honor is the older.

The election is based on the intention to make a selection from the best players in the league for hypothetical interleague play, with the All-NBA first team as the starting five and the second team as the bank. In fact, the NBA forbade such interleague matches. Nevertheless, in 1971 and 1972 two teams called All-Stars with representatives of the NBA and the American Basketball Association (ABA) played for a charitable cause, but primarily for the benefit of the players' unions in both leagues, one charity game, called Supergame I and Supergame II . Of the ten NBA players, five were each from the All-NBA team and of the eleven ABA players in 1971 seven and 1972 six from the All-ABA team. Neither the All-League Team nor the All-Star Team were represented in 1971 by an ABA player (Willie Wise) and an NBA player ( Nate Thurmond , who was at least a member of the All-Defensive Team ) and in 1972 an ABA player ( Jimmy Jones). The NBA player Nate Archibald was also not an All-Star in 1972, but was a member of the All-NBA Second Team.

Record holder

Of the 243 honorees, LeBron James was elected twelve times and thus most frequently to the All-NBA First Team, followed by Karl Malone and Kobe Bryant , each with eleven appointments. With 15 overall elections, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar , Tim Duncan , Kobe Bryant and LeBron James hold the overall record, followed by Karl Malone and Shaquille O'Neal with 14 each.
