DFB Cup 1991/92

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1992 DFB Cup winner was the second division Hannover 96 . It was the only DFB Cup victory of a second division team and also the only one of the Hanoverians. In the course of the competition, the Lower Saxony had defeated six first division clubs in a row with VfL Bochum, Borussia Dortmund, KFC Uerdingen, Karlsruher SC, Werder Bremen and in the final Borussia Mönchengladbach. Before that, Kickers Offenbach, who had already been promoted from the 2nd division to the Bundesliga at the time of the final, won a cup in 1970.

Since this season there has been no replay in the preliminary rounds either; all decisions are made at the latest in the penalty shoot-out .

In the first round of the subsequent European Cup Winners 'Cup , the DfB Cup winner Hannover 96 again met their semi-final opponent Werder Bremen, who had also qualified as the winner of the previous European Cup Winners' Cup, and lost after a 1: 3 in the first leg and a 2: 1 in the second leg with an overall result of 3: 4.

Participants and game mode

After the entry of the Northeast German Football Association (successor to the former DFV of the GDR), clubs from the new federal states took part in the 1991/92 cup competition . All clubs that had played in the GDR Football Oberliga 1990/91 or the (second-class) league in 1990/91 were given the opportunity to qualify for the first main round: While the first six teams in the Oberliga (which compete for the 1. or 2. Bundesliga 1991/92) were set for the first main round, four other teams (namely the two group first and second ) qualified via the qualifying round for the 2. Bundesliga , in which the seventh to twelfth-placed and the champions of the two league seasons participated. From the other teams (13th and 14th of the Oberliga plus the remaining 30 league teams), four more clubs qualified in one elimination round, a total of 14 clubs from the old NOFV leagues. Six other teams qualified through the East German state cups.

In order to get from 88 teams to 64 teams, not all clubs took part in the first round; the 20 clubs of the 1st Bundesliga and 20 amateur clubs received a bye. Due to the larger field of participants, there were seven rounds in this competition instead of six in the previous season.

The play-off between VfB Lohberg and FC Remscheid , often referred to as a separate qualifying game for the DFB Cup , which the Remscheid team won on penalties, was actually just the normal state cup final in the Niederrheinpokal .
