The Football League First Division 1989/90 was the 91st season of the highest English football league . It began on August 19, 1989 and ended on May 5, 1990.

With a nine point lead over Aston Villa , Liverpool FC won their 18th championship. The runners-ended Tottenham Hotspur defending champions Arsenal . All newly promoted Chelsea , Manchester City and Crystal Palace were able to keep the class, instead Sheffield Wednesday , Charlton Athletic and Millwall FC relegated to the Second Division . This should be replaced in the following season by the second division promoted Leeds United , Sheffield United and AFC Sunderland .

A total of 458 players were used, with Everton having the fewest with 19 and Manchester City with 28 the most players in league games. 92 newcomers were opposed to 82 footballers who last came into play in the 1989/90 season. 33 players were able to play all 38 league games of their club.
