Georg Meier (born August 26, 1987 in Trier ) is a German grandmaster in chess .
Life
Georg Meier learned to play chess when he was three years old. His mother taught him the rules of chess. He was trained in between by Lev Gutman and since 2002 by Vladimir Chuchelov .

Individual tournaments
In 2003 he was first German youth internet champion (U18) and then German U16 champion in Willingen (Upland) . In August 2006 he won a First Saturday GM tournament in Budapest . At the 2007 European Championships in Dresden , he was only half a point behind the winner Vladislav Tkachiev . In July 2007 he won the open Hessian rapid chess championship in Frankfurt-Kalbach . At the 10th European Championships in Budva in 2009 , he was half a point behind the top and reached 12th place with 7.5 points from 11 games. He won the German youth internet championship (U25) in the same year. In December 2009 he won the tournament Ciudad de Pamplona ( category 13) thanks to better fine-rating before the tied Julio Granda , Viktor Láznička and Kiril Georgiev , in July 2010, the ZMDI Open in Dresden and in December 2010 the 34th Zurich Christmas Open . Meier won the gold medal in chess at the European Maccabiotics in Vienna in 2011 and in Berlin in 2015 , as well as at the Israeli Maccabiade 2017 in Jerusalem .
National team
Georg Meier is a senior player in the German national team. He took part three times with the German national team in the Mitropa Cup , an important national youth tournament. In May 2007 in Szeged , Germany took 3rd place, with Meier on board 2 with 4.5 out of 8, a positive overall performance. At the 2008 Chess Olympiad in Dresden he took part on the top board for the Germany II team, scoring 7 points from 9 games with an Elo rating of 2779. In 2012 , 2014 , 2016 and 2018 he took part in the Chess Olympiad again. At the European Championships in 2009 in Novi Sad , 2011 in Porto Carras , 2013 in Warsaw and 2015 in Reykjavík as well as 2017 in Limenas Chersonisou , he played on the second board of the German team, at the European Team Championships 2019 in Batumi on the fourth board. He won the European Championship in 2011 with the German team, winning the decisive game in the last round against Sergej Movsesjan . At the team world championship 2013 in Antalya he played on the second board of the German team.
Club teams
His first club was the Trier SK Zewen when he was nine , then he moved to SC Trier-Süd , later to SC Bann . Since the 2005/06 season he played for the Eppingen chess club in the German Federal Chess League ; for the 2007/08 season he moved to Werder Bremen , in the 2010/11 season and again from the 2013/14 season to the 2016/17 season Meier played at OSG Baden-Baden , with which he played in 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2017 German team champion was. He has been playing for SF Deizisau since 2017 . He played for the first time in the Austrian Chess League in the 2009/10 season on the first board of SG Holz Dohr Semriach . In the 2010/11 season he played there for SK Advisory Invest Baden . Meier was also active in the Luxembourg 1st division. In France he played for Vandoeuvre-Echecs , in Spain for Mérida Patrimonio and Escola d'Escacs de Barcelona and in Belgium for Fontaine . In the Swedish Elitserien , Meier played for SK Team Viking in the 2015/16 season , from 2016 to 2018 he played for the team from Malmö AS , with which he became champions in 2018 .
Title and rating
Meier has been a grandmaster since July 2007. He secured the first GM norm when he won the tournament in Budapest, and he achieved the second with his result of 8 out of 13 in the 2006/07 Bundesliga . He achieved the third GM standard at the European Championships in Dresden in April 2007. His highest place in the world rankings was 65th in September 2009, tied with Ernesto Inarkiew and Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu .
