Local communities

history

The place and the region are known for the extraction and processing of iron. There were already several iron mines in ancient times. Iron products have been traded since the 16th century. Among other things, the traditional Turkish coffee grinders were produced in the region.

population

The 1991 census showed the following composition:

War 1992 to 1995

During the Bosnian War , Gornji Vakuf was one of the places hardest hit by the clashes between the Army of Bosnian Croats ( HVO ) and the predominantly Bosniak ARBiH . The city was badly destroyed and in fact split into two ethnically homogeneous communities: Gornji Vakuf (Bosniak) and Uskoplje (Croatian). In 2001, Gornji Vakuf and Uskoplje were merged into one municipality with the new name Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje .

traffic

In 1945 Gornji Vakuf got a train station because the Yugoslav State Railways (JDŽ) extended the Lašva – Donji Vakuf – Bugojno / Jajce line from Bugojno to Gornji Vakuf. The railway with a Bosnian gauge of 760 mm ran over the Komar Pass with a cogwheel drive . The narrow-gauge trains or their locomotives were affectionately called "Ćiro" in the Yugoslav vernacular. In 1972 the narrow-gauge railway was stopped and the tracks dismantled.
