Hermes is a French commune with 2,498 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Oise in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality is located in the arrondissement of Beauvais and is part of the canton of Mouy .

The municipality on the railway line from Beauvais to Creil with the districts Marguerie, Méhécourt, Carville, Caillouel and Friancourt is crossed by Thérain , into which the stream La Trye flows from the left and the Ruisseau de Parisis from the right. It shares the station with the immediately neighboring Berthecourt . The distance to Mouy is around eight kilometers and to Noailles around six kilometers. In the north of the municipality are the remains of the former Cistercian abbey Froidmont (the place of the same name in the neighboring municipality of Bailleul-sur-Thérain ). In the north, the domain forest Forêt domaniale de Hez-Froidmont is partly on the territory of the municipality.

Toponymy and History

The place name is derived from the Latin name Mons Hermarum. Hermes can be found in the Carte de Cassini .

The place was already settled in the Neolithic Age. Historically, it was in the land of the Bellovacians , a Belgian tribe. In Gallo-Roman times, the vicus Ratumagus stood here . A Merovingian necropolis was discovered during excavations in the 19th century . In the Middle Ages, the municipality was under the rule of the Froidmont monastery. In 1187 a fortress was built under the protection of the Counts of Clermont , which the Bishop of Beauvais Philip von Dreux had destroyed soon afterwards. After its reconstruction, it served as a hideout for muggers during the Hundred Years War and in the Jacquerie until it was finally destroyed in 1431. The rule of the Froidmont monastery ended with the French Revolution . From 1880 to 1949 a meter-gauge secondary railway connected Hermes with Beaumont-sur-Oise .
